Latin, French, and Spanish are taught beginning in fifth grade. At the end of the school year, students must choose one among the three which they follow for their Middle School career. French and Spanish are immersion classes where activities take place in the target language in order to acquire solid proficiencies in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Many games are played, role play situations are acted out; and in addition, the culture of foreign countries is studied and appreciated. Nearly one-third of our Middle Schoolers opt to take Latin as their foreign language.  The study of Latin provides a solid foundation for the acquisition of other languages, and at the same time it strengthens English grammar and vocabulary.  Again, acquaintance with ancient cultures – other than our own – promotes tolerance and understanding.
