Graduate Teacher Training with Lesley University

A residency program designed for aspiring Elementary, Middle and High School teachers

Thank you for your interest in Berwick Academy's teacher residency program. We are pleased to partner with Lesley University to offer an affordable and comprehensive teacher training program. Each of our teaching apprentices (TAs) earn legitimate work experience at Berwick Academy, one of New England's finest independent schools, while earning their Masters of Education degree.

Spend a year teaching in the classroom while getting your M.Ed.

The GTT program is designed for highly motivated adults who want to learn and practice successful teaching skills by immersing themselves in a full time teaching apprenticeship program. It is our belief that true learning and growth occurs while working alongside seasoned and dedicated mentor teachers. Our six TAs receive individualized guidance, support and feedback from their mentor teacher, the on-site program director, and one another during their time on BA's hilltop.

During the first summer, the TAs build a solid foundation in education theories by enrolling in four graduate courses. In late August, they join the Berwick Academy faculty and begin applying their knowledge through supervised teaching and seminar discussions. During the year, our TAs actively participate in the Berwick community: developing curriculum, teaching lessons, participating in parent-teacher conferences, and joining in additional school enrichment activities of their interests, such as coaching. At Berwick Academy, TAs are valued and contributing members of the school community.
"A great teacher is a great learner. A great teacher will be learning constantly about his or her students, about their cultures, and about society, and always adapting his or her approach to incorporate new ideas into work with students. A great teacher is a facilitator of student learning, not just a provider of knowledge, and will strive to inspire the students to be lifelong learners themselves."
- Greg Sokol, Teaching Apprentice

Serving Maine, The Seacoast of New Hampshire, and the North Shore of Massachusetts

Berwick Academy is Maine's oldest, independent Pre-K through Post Graduate private school. Our community is dynamic, offering challenging academics, competitive athletics, and creative arts programs. Members of the community operate within a context of caring and respect as we pursue our quest for "useful knowledge" as "one school with three divisions." Students and faculty are encouraged to expand their horizons by balancing academics with athletic, dramatic, and musical options.
