Middle School

Students study in Middle SchoolIn Berwick Academy’s Middle School, we understand that students at this age are experiencing the time of adolescence – a time filled with enormous intellectual, physical, social, and emotional changes. Our Middle School students move through a departmentalized program taught by faculty who embrace these years of growth and self-discovery.

The core of the curriculum is traditional with emphasis placed on reading, writing, and mathematics. With the increased volume of content in these subject areas comes the need for strong study skills, time management, and organization. Students in grades five and six learn to use planners and take notes followed by a review of these skills in grades seven and eight. Our students are challenged with concepts and skills that go beyond the rote response. Analytical and critical thinking skills are developed at an age appropriate level.

All students participate in our performance-based music, art, and theater programs. In music, students select from ensembles: guitar, orchestra, band, chorus, or African drumming. Each fall, students present a musical production. Whether on stage or working behind the scenes, students experience working as a team.

Energy and enthusiasm abound in Middle School students. The sports program ensures that all Girls at BAstudents participate in physical activity on a regular basis. Students move from an intramural program in grades five and six to the competitive program in their final two years. Team play, leadership, and commitment are at the core of our mission.

Our advisory system helps strengthen important student-teacher relationships and conquers issues as they arise. Advisors offer support for academic as well as social matters by meeting with advisees two times a week. The faculty strives to enhance students’ talents while providing them with challenges that inspire students to advance and grow.
