Program Description
The Teaching Institute promises an invigorating, comprehensive introduction to the art of reflective teaching. The Institute is a yearlong collaborative venture between Berwick Academy and the University of New England, resulting in a Master of Science degree in Education with a concentration in Teaching Methodology. Additionally, interns will be eligible for elementary certification in the State of Maine, offering reciprocity in forty-two other states. Full-time classroom teaching placements in Berwick's Lower School (grades K-4) and Middle School (grades 5-8) enhance and inform the required coursework.
Interns will be supported throughout their experience by a supervising teacher, an on campus faculty advisor, program administrators, and a university advisor. Interns will be immersed in the life of the school as they discover the art of effective teaching through observation, workshops, coursework, readings and professional development opportunities on and off campus. This purposeful integration of coursework, classroom placements, and involvement in the multiple dimensions of school life provides the optimal environment for becoming successful and effective teachers.
The Teaching Institute best serves the candidate who is:
- A successful graduate of an accredited undergraduate program, having earned a B.S. or B.A.
- Intellectually curious
- Energetic and focused
- Involved and contributing in their community
- Dedicated to meaningful experiences with children
- Committed to becoming a teacher
Internship Coursework
With the exception of the final portfolio course and the four online courses offered by the University of New England, all courses will be offered on the 80-acre Berwick Academy campus. Interns will spend four days a week in their teaching placement and one full day a week involved in coursework. The structure of these on-campus courses allows assignments to complement the experiences undertaken in the intern's classroom placement, maximizing the effect of each. Additionally, interns will meet one afternoon weekly throughout the year to engage in group study and reflection with a program administrator and select faculty members.
