Upper School

The Upper School at Berwick Academy is where adolescents become independent, confident young adults. The Upper School experience ensures that the first step into the world beyond Berwick will also be a step up on the ladder of success. Although there is great emphasis on the final result, we do not lose sight of the journey.

The traditional, liberal arts program demands much of its students. The rigorous academic program concentrates on the development of the ability to reason, reach independent conclusions, and apply knowledge and skills learned in one discipline to another. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered in all subject areas.

Beyond the academic sphere and its requirements, Berwick recognizes the need for students to interact, interrelate, and contribute to the school community. All students participate in the arts program with art and music classes being exhibition and performance based. Each semester’s work culminates in concerts and art exhibits.

The sports program offers ten junior varsity and varsity level opportunities. Our teams work hard together, with the junior varsity level focus on skill development and competition and the varsity level on reaching tournament status. The majority of our coaches are our teachers who model sportsmanship and commitment. Two seasons of play are required for ninth and tenth grades and one season for eleventh and twelfth. Dance is considered a sport and may take the place of the team sport requirement.  Community Service

During their final four years, we ask students to look beyond the Hilltop – to contribute to the ‘common good.’ Community service is found on and away from campus. One may find senior students working with kindergarten or Upper School athletes running clinics for Middle School teams. Our surrounding communities benefit from our students’ efforts – working in soup kitchens, raking for the elderly, shopping for holiday gifts, and running the Red Cross Blood Drive. During the summer, faculty and students travel to Guatemala to renovate schools. The rewards for their participation go beyond the external; students take pride in giving of themselves.

We have clear expectations for every student in the Upper School, but we encourage each one to take responsibility for shaping his or her goals. We want to ensure that each member of every graduating class has a wealth of diverse learning experiences as he and she move closer to their goal for success in college and in life.
