Welcome to the website of Berwick Academy, where we hope you
gain your first glimpse at what makes this community so special. It took very
little time within my first year as head of school to understand what makes
this school such a unique place. From the first time I walked on campus, I was
struck by a compelling sense of community. This is a place where enthusiasm and
approachability are the norm, and I hope that you will find our culture to be
as invigorating as I have. Our students, faculty, and staff operate within a
context of caring and respect as we pursue our quest for "useful knowledge” as
“one school with three divisions.”
The Berwick community is a dynamic, challenging, and caring group of teachers and learners. Students on the Hilltop connect with adults and peers through a mutual sense of respect. Berwick strikes a unique balance by being academically rigorous through an incredibly rich program, while tempering that challenge with a sense of caring and warmth. Your child will be known here. On this campus, students are encouraged to stretch themselves and take risks, expanding their horizons through a well-rounded approach that balances the academic experience with the extraordinary athletic, dramatic, artistic, and musical options available at the school.
As the oldest educational institution in Maine, Berwick Academy has evolved greatly since its founding days in 1791. That tradition of evolution continues today with the tablet computer initiative being introduced in grades 7-12. We continue to explore new ways of reaching every child in our community, and we believe strongly that excellence can and does have many faces here. Students respect each other's talents, and they ultimately pursue passions in an incredible array of arenas. What binds all of us together, however, is a commitment to strive for our personal best in all that we do.
I encourage you to peruse this website to get a first taste of what makes the Berwick experience so valuable. If you are a prospective family, I would encourage you to visit our campus in person to see our remarkable facility. If you are a current parent or Berwick alumni, I also welcome you to reconnect to the school through this site. Whether you are a new or familiar face, I will look forward to meeting you in person when you come to the Hilltop for a visit. We are eager to help you understand what makes the Berwick experience unique.
Sincerely yours,
Gregory J. Schneider
