My class read about Abraham Lincoln and wanted to share some facts through their young eyes.  John Wilkes Booth shot and killed Abraham Lincoln when he was watching a play in the movie theater.

Abraham Lincoln looked like he needed to eat more, maybe he should have drank more water to be strong.

He freed the slaves in our country and helped our country live. He tried his best.

He fought in the Civil War. He protected our country.

He is remembered through the Lincoln Memorial, the penny, and the dollar.

Lincoln's death was at a show where one of the actors shot him. J.B. Lakeland, FL

An Abraham Lincoln report and drawing by Reagan, a second grade boy at Bay Area Christian School in League City, Texas.

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809.  He lived in a log cabin. When he was 9 years old his mother died from Milk Fever.  This is when a cow eats a poisonous snake weed and then it gets in the milk and a person drinks it.  Abraham Lincoln was very poor growing up.

Abraham Lincoln was a storekeeper, rail-splitter, postmaster and a lawyer.  He taught himself law then he passed the bar.  He was known as Honest Abe because of his common sense and honesty.  His wife’s name was Mary.  Abraham and Mary had four sons.  Three of their sons died before becoming adults.  One of his favorite foods was an election cake baked by his wife. He loved to read and write.

Abraham Lincoln became the 16th president.  He was president from 1861 to 1865.  He was president during the Civil War.  After the war, President Lincoln freed the slaves.  He was the 1st Republican president. He was the first president to have a beard.  He was the tallest president at 6’4”.  He kept important papers in his hat.  President Lincoln made the last Thursday of November the official Thanksgiving Day.

Five days after the South surrendered in the Civil War, President Lincoln went to a play at the Ford Theater and was shot while watching the play.  He died the next day on April 15th, 1865.  He is on the Lincoln Memorial located in Washington, D.C., and on the penny and five dollar bill.

I admired Abraham Lincoln the most because he freed the slaves.

The following is an excerpt from a paper written by William, age 14,  for his teacher Mr. Rummler at Karcher Middle School in Burlington, Wisconsin.

Seven score and three years ago, our ancestors brought forth on this nation, a nation in grief and sorrow a man.  A man who would take our country through thick and thin.  A man who would let slaves free, and guide our country through the greatest war of our history.  This man was Abraham Lincoln and this is his story of gratefulness and sadness.

Abraham Lincoln showed our country that we can survive as a nation.  He did so much for our country and we give him so little.  For he abolished slavery, showed poor people could become president and the most important kept our nation together. So when you hear the words Old Abe, Honest Abe , The Little Giant Killer and Abraham Lincoln think of the great man and what he did for you me and our country.  For Abraham died for what he thought would be best for our country and his thoughts were correct.

The following poem was written by Beth for her son Kyle’s 3rd grade class at Livingston Elementary School in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Abraham Lincoln

The 16th President
was a rather tall dude.
He had a beard, but no mustache,
And he looked like he didn’t eat much food.

His name was Abraham Lincoln,
But his friends called him Abe.
His wife Mary Todd,
Well, she just called him "babe".

He led our great country,
During the bloody Civil War.
They were very hard times,
Those years 1861 to 1864.

It was the North against the South,
The Blue against the Gray,
Fighting over the right to own slaves,
Things we can’t even imagine of today.

But Abe had a plan,
How to unite our Great Nation,
He freed the slaves in a speech,
Called the Emancipation Proclamation.

His greatest challenge,
Was to reunite our great land,
He encouraged the Rebels
To throw down the guns in their hands.

Old Abe was flexible and generous.
He helped to end the Civil War.
People thought he was so cool,
They re-elected him in 1864!

Mr. Lincoln was so well liked,
There was not much to be hated,
That’s why the Nation was shocked to learn.
That he’d been assassinated!

Mr. Lincoln died in Ford’s Theatre,
While attending a play,
No one could have even guessed,
The events that would unfold that sad day,

It was John Wilkes Booth, an actor,
Who didn’t want President Lincoln alive,
He shot and fatally killed him,
It was April 15th in the year 1865.

Now his face is on the penny,
So if you see one, stop and pick it up,
Put it in your pocket,
Maybe Abe will bring you good luck!

He’s on the five dollar bill too,
So if you really get to thinkin’,
Instead of giving someone a "High Five"
You can give them a "High Lincoln"!
