Lower School: Community Expectations

It is expected that Lower School students will arrive at school dressed in a manner that is respectful of our endeavor as a Division.

" Kindergarten: Boys and girls should dress neatly, yet in clothes appropriate for activities ranging from indoor art projects to outdoor playground activities.

" Grades One Through Four:

Shirts: Boys may wear a dress shirt, polo shirt, turtleneck or sweater. Non-commercial t-shirts that are nicely finished may be worn. Girls may wear a dress shirt, blouse, polo shirt, turtleneck or sweater. Non-commercial t-shirts that are nicely finished may be worn. Tank tops, spaghetti straps, and "belly shirts" may not be worn.

Pants: Boys and girls may wear casual dress pants, khakis, corduroys and other cotton and/or polyester blend pants. Dress shorts (not athletic shorts or lycra shorts) may be worn when the weather is appropriate. Girls may also wear dresses, skirts, skorts and capris when the weather is appropriate. (Skirts, skorts and shorts must be no shorter than four inches above the knee cap.) Boys and girls may not wear athletic pants, wind pants, sweat pants, and denim pants.

Shoes: Boys and girls may wear sneakers, casual dress shoes and sandals with a heel strap. Platform shoes may not be worn, and sandals without a heel strap (such as flip-flops) may not be worn. (Please keep in mind the important goal of student safety and comfort on the playground and in other Lower School program situations.)

Students may not wear hats indoors.

Students may not wear over-sized clothing to school.

" Dress down days: The Lower School will have dress down days for various events throughout the year. On these days, students may choose to wear such clothing as denim jeans, sweat pants, t-shirts and sweatshirts with "appropriate" graphics and lettering. We expect that students will still wear neat and clean clothing (e.g. no rips or tears in blue jeans or t-shirts) on dress down days. Students may not wear tank tops, spaghetti straps, or belly shirts even on dress down days.

" Dress code violations will be brought to the attention of the Lower School Director. The Director will then contact the student and/or parent about the particular dress code issue. The Lower School faculty discourages the practice of students "policing" other students on dress code issues.
