Lower School Technology

Our campus-wide network serves all classrooms and offices of the Academy. Student access to computer resources is available in many locations, including the Jackson Library, every classroom, and computer labs in each division. Students in all grade levels have access to file-sharing, shared applications, and T1 high-speed Internet access through secure logon to our network. Students are instructed on network use through visits to the computer lab in Lower School, scheduled computer classes in Middle School, and special instructional times for all Freshman and new Upper Schoolers.

Berwick Academy is in Year 1 of our "Learning with Tablets" program. All teachers in Upper and Middle School have a mobile tablet computer. Middle School students in grades 7 and 8 have their own tablet computers which they use both at home and at school. Our tablet program will move up one grade each year, until all students in grades 7-12 are participating in 2010-2011. To find out more about our "Learning with Tablets" program.

Our wireless network coverage will soon be campus-wide. Wireless laptops are available for patron use in the Jackson Library.  Visitors are welcome to connect to the wireless network with their personal laptops if they have up-to-date virus protection. Our wireless network is encrypted, please bring your laptop to the Help Desk in the Middle School to verify your virus status and obtain the password for the wireless network. All laptop users are expected to abide by our Acceptable Use Policies when using personal computers on the Berwick Academy network.

Safety and security on our network and the Internet is guided by our Acceptable Use Policy. Lower School students receive guidance and supervision on the network and the Internet at all times.

Over the past years, Berwick Academy students have created several Internet website projects that continue to serve the Internet community world-wide. The Life of Abraham Lincoln presents a timeline of Lincoln's life in English and Spanish and attracts thousands of young visitors each year. Poetic Voices: An Online CoffeeHouse received the National Semiconductor award in 2001. Other Internet student projects include MillGirls: Lowell Mills during the Industrial Revolution, and Predators and Their Prey.
