Over time, working conditions became an issue in the Lowell mills. Hundreds of women united to pressure the government and the corporations to pass laws to limit the length of the work day.  Unsuccessful, over time many mill girls began to leave the mills, their positions filled by the new wave of immigrant workers arriving in America.
