Dear Journal,

I went outside this morning to grab a bit of fresh air. I saw a few mill girls walking to work. Right then I was so happy that I never had to work in a mill when I was a girl. My father was president of Bowdoin College. He had a very good income and our family was quite wealthy. Not only am I glad I never had to work in a mill, I am also am also very happy that Sarah and Martha, my two daughters, never had to work in a mill.

WHO AM I?

Sophia Lewis—a free black slave

Lydia Collins—a boarding house keeper

Mary Aiken—a house wife
