The arts program at Berwick Academy comprises a variety of meaningful experiences and opportunities in both “performance and exhibition.” All students are encouraged to participate, no matter their skill level, because knowledge of the arts is beneficial to the whole child and requires taking healthy risks. Their hard work culminates in music recitals and art exhibitions for family and friends to enjoy on campus, as well as at local, state, and national levels to enhance the personal experience and bring an appreciation for national recognition of the Berwick community.
We are proud of our arts program’s integration of the arts with core studies whenever possible. For example, as students are studying South American tribes in seventh grade humanities class, they are creating original tribe masks in art class. We find that this integration enhances creativity, reinforces the subject matter and generates more affection for what is learned. One of our fundamental educational goals at Berwick is helping students to draw meaningful connections and insights, and artistic expression is a catalyst for this worthy goal.
The Dance Production is a three-division event involving students of the Dance Program at Berwick. The event is held in May in the Whipple Arts Center Theater and involves a new theme every year.
Four theater productions (1 LS, 1 MS, and 2 US)
The Lower School performs the Lower School Production in the Whipple Arts Center theater each February. Students from every grade level K-4 participate in this educational and entertaining event.
The Middle School performs their musical in the month of November. Over 100 students and faculty members participate in this annual event.
The Upper School performs a play in October in the Fogg Memorial Building. The musical is held in February or March in the Whipple Arts Center Theater. Students from all three divisions have been participating in this event since 2009. Recent musicals include: "The Sound of Music," "Oliver!," and "The King and I."
Seven Annual Music Recitals

Six Winter and Spring Concerts
The Middle School holds two concerts in December and two concerts in May, one combined concert by grades 5 and 6 and another by grades 7 and 8. Performances include the African Drum Ensemble, Chamber, Guitar, Chorus, and the Band.
The Upper School performs one concert in December and one in May. Performing groups include the Chorus, the Jazz Band, and Chamber.
Winterfest for the Arts
This three-division event showcases Berwick’s premier musicians and artists. Selected through an audition process, students grace our stage – performing individually or in an ensemble. Students and instructors select pieces that challenge the range of technique and provide a variety of style. Prior to the music performance, families enjoy an art exhibition of 2-D and 3-D pieces created by advanced placement students. The result is an evening memorable for its artistic presentation, division representation, and anticipation of future performance opportunities.
