Capital and Endowment Gifts
In 2000 the Trustees created a strategic vision for Berwick Academy and in doing so set forth the following goals
- To remain accessible financially.
- To build a faculty of distinction.
- To continue to lower our already low student to faculty ratio.
- Be financially prepared for future demographic challenges
- To expand the Lower School, expand and renovate the Middle School, upgrade and renovate the Whipple Arts Theater and continue to preserve Fogg Memorial as a National Historic Landmark
Endowment Funds
The Faculty Restricted Endowment Fund
Goal: $3,000,000.00
Raised to Date: $2,721,934
This Fund will provide funding in perpetuity to raise faculty salaries and to hire new teachers. At present such funding is limited to tuition increases and the Annual Fund. The Faculty Fund will significantly expand the Academy's ability to attract and retain the best possible faculty.
The Professional Development Endowment Fund
Goal: $2,000,000.00
Raised to Date: $523,193
This fund will be the central program for many of the faculty's professional development requests. It will fund such limited programs as one-day workshops and professional memberships as well as more ambitious pro rams such as week-long Advanced Placement courses and summer study at nearby universities. The goal reflects the recommendations of the National Association of Independent Schools. Faculty Summer Study grants can be named for $25,000.00 and Graduate Summer Study grants can be named for $100,000.

This fund will be the central program for many of the faculty's professional development requests in the area of music. It will fund such limited programs as one-day workshops and professional memberships as well as more ambitious programs such as week-long courses and summer study at nearby universities
Gladys S. Perkin Fund for Math and Science
Goal: $500,000.00
Raised to Date: $100,000
This fund will be the central program for many of the faculty's professional development requests in the area of math and science.
The Schleyer Family Sabbatical Endowment Fund
Goal: $500,000.00
Raised to Date:$568,925
This fund will provide support for faculty sabbaticals. Recent recipients include: Third Grade Teacher Christine Quinn Thibodeau, Eighth Grade English teacher, Janet Miller and Upper School faculty member Sue Maddock. Janet traveled to England for a semester-long study of Shakespeare at Oxford University with partial funding from this Fund. Sue took courses a year at Northwestern University in Advanced Web Design, as a result she is teaching two electives in web design one using Photoshop and Dreamweaver and another using JavaScript. Christine Quinn-Thibodeau spent a semester completing certification coursework to be a mentor teacher.
The Kokernak Family Master's Fund
Goal: $500,000.00
Raised to Date:$570,105
The fund was established to support employees who are working on advanced degrees. This past year four faculty members were able to pursue advanced degrees in Music, Science, Elementary Education and Athletic training. The goal of the Fund is to cover all expenses for degree work.
Beswick Family Endowment Fund
Goal: $500,000
Raised to Date: $417,500
The funds will enable us to institute a creative thinking/entrepreneurial effort in the Upper School. Grants will be made to faculty to try new programs etc that stimulate creative and entrepreneurial thinking.
Lower School Academic Support Fund
Goal: $1,000,000
Raised to date $1,000.000
The monies generated by this fund will permanently support the Lower School Academic Support position.
Ridgway Family History Department Chairman Fund
Goal: $1,000,000
Raised to Date: $1,000,000
The monies generated by this fund will permanently support the History Department Chairman position.
Unrestricted Fund
Goal: $5,799,424
Raised to Date: $4,917,706
Unrestricted contributions grant the Academy the greatest latitude in addressing the most pressing needs of the school today as well as the emerging needs of the next generation of students.
Scholarship Endowment Funds
Only the income earned from each of these funds is available to support our financial aid budget. No money is expended from the fund until the fund reaches a minimum of $50,000.
Thompson Perpetual Trust—approximately $35,000 is available each year for scholarships for Middle School children. Students must apply.
Ella Estelle Geyer Stonebreaker '29 Scholarship Fund, a planned gift which will be available upon the death of the daughter and the monies earned will be available for students talented in the arts, music or drama.
Marie Donahue Endowed Scholarship Fund monies are annually available to provide financial aid to an incoming South Berwick freshman.
Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund valued is available for financial aid to an Upper School student in increments of $500. Alumni related students are given preference.
Daniel J. Boisvert '94 Memorial Scholarship Fund established by his classmates in 1999. Monies will be available to a student entering Berwick after the freshman year who is well rounded in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities once the fund reaches $50,000.
The Barbara Hilton Converse Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by her daughter, Anne Converse Willkomm ’83, to help single parents with send their child to Berwick. Funds are available to students in grades eight through twelve.
Dr. Albert L. Kerr Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2005 and will be available to help provide a Berwick education to worthy upper school students with financial need who are descendants of Academy graduates. This Endowment Fund was the inspiration of the Class of 1963.
Dr. and Mrs. John T. Kennedy Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to provide an annual scholarship to a student who has been a Maine resident for at least 5 years prior to enrollment at B.A.
Beulah M. Miller and F. Roger Miller Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to provide an annual scholarship for a South Berwick student.
Restricted Funds
Alumni Endowment/Fogg Fund — Dedicated to assist the Academy with operations restricted to the ongoing maintenance, updating historic preservation and equipping of Fogg.
The Christopher Linney Fund — The income withdrawn from this endowment fund shall be used for students educational and enrichment programs at Berwick Academy in the sciences and visual and performing arts.
Keith Adams Memorial Endowed Fund — for drug & alcohol awareness programs.
Senior Gift Endowment Funds
Each year the graduating seniors are asked to make a gift to their Class Fund. In addition their parents are asked one last time to make a stretch gift to their children’s Class Fund. The monies raised from this effort go to support a campus gift in honor of the graduating class and to establish an endowed Fund in honor of the Class. Going forward the Class is asked to continue supporting their Class Fund.
When the Class returns for their 20th reunion they will determine the restricted use of their Class Fund. The Class of 1990 will be the first Class to dedicate their fund.
Capital Project Funds-Ongoing
Alumni Endowment/Fogg Fund — Dedicated to assisting the Academy with operations restricted to the ongoing maintenance, updating, historic preservation and equipping of Fogg.
Campus Preservation and Expansion monies made possible the purchase of 5 acres of land abutting the campus for future athletic fields and buildings, the creation of the Outdoor Classroom as well as restoration and capital improvements to Burleigh–Davidson and to Fogg.
Technology Capital Improvements — These monies are enabling us to institute a wireless campus, the Tablet program and upgrade our cabling and projectors.
Patricia Baldwin Whipple Arts Center Renovation — These monies will be used to maintain the Arts Center and to upgrade and renovate the theater.
