The Annual Fund
These monies support the ongoing operations of the Academy each year. Like all private institutions tuition alone does not cover the cost to educate our students. Annual Fund contributions enable Berwick to work toward maintaining a socio-economically diverse student body by keeping tuition accessible and providing scholarships. In addition they facilitate our ability to provide faculty with competitive salaries thus allowing Berwick to attract and retain high quality faculty members for all our students.
Berwick Academy is especially challenged at this time due to the interest payments on the bonding for the renovation of the Jeppesen Science Center and the Jackson Library. These monies, which are currently expended from our Endowment Fund, could otherwise be made available in part to support ongoing operations and additional scholarships.
During this school year 2007-2008, we must raise $441,000 from private contributions through personal solicitation and direct mail appeals to alumni, parents, grand parents and friends. These dollars go directly into operations and make up the difference between tuition revenues and the cost to educate each child.
The Capital and Endowment Funds
In 2000 the Trustees created a strategic vision for Berwick Academy and in doing so set forth the following goals:
- To remain accessible financially thus enabling Berwick Academy to continue its tradition of providing an education to a socio-economically diverse student body.
- To build a faculty of distinction.
- To continue to lower our already low student-to-faculty ratio.
- Be financially prepared for demographic challenges
- To expand the Lower School, The Middle School, upgrade and renovate the Whipple Arts Theater and continue to preserve Fogg Memorial as a National Historic Landmark

Join the Chadbourne Thompson Society
School tuition does not cover the complete costs of educating children at any independent school. The annual contributions of alumni, parents and friends, in addition to endowment income, help limit tuition increases, improve faculty salaries, provide financial aid and assist with ongoing capital improvements and building maintenance. Indeed, Berwick Academy would find it difficult to provide quality education if not for annual contributions.
However, the key to long-term financial sustainability of any organization is a healthy Endowment Fund. To generate the income needed to replace our Annual Fund today, Berwick Academy needs an Unrestricted Endowment of $8,000,000.
Chadbourne-Thompson Society members are helping to make this possible. These very generous and loyal supporters of the Academy have named Berwick Academy as a beneficiary of their estate plans. Some have included Berwick in their wills; some have named Berwick as the beneficiary of their retirement plans; others have established charitable remainder trusts.
As you plan for your future and your family's future, you, too, may wish to include Berwick Academy in your plans. Life income gifts can realize many benefits for you and your family. Benefits may include reductions in income, capital gains, gift or estate taxes. At the same time you may be able to receive an income for life or a term of years or income for a second beneficiary, perhaps your spouse, child or grandchild.
