Coronavirus Information & Updates

Updated on Friday, April 3, 2020
This page serves as the information hub for campus news related to the coronavirus (COVID-19). Please check back regularly for updates.
Dear Berwick Parents,

Greetings from the Hilltop. While brief, and through car windows and rear hatches, it was great to see so many of you over the past two days picking up materials from campus. We’ve missed connecting with you, and those quick check-ins lifted our spirits.
This has been a busy week for the women and men who work with your children. They have spent time learning new technology, collaborating, adapting lessons, and creating syllabi to deliver on our promise of sustaining our academic program remotely. Their commitment to their students is noteworthy, and while we are all somewhat nervous, as many of our students might be, about teaching and learning in this new model, I am confident that their preparation will serve them well.
As parents of three Berwick students, Lucy and I can relate to what our households have looked like over the past couple of weeks. We have worked hard to get our kids moving and outside regularly. We have instituted regular breaks from their online activity while at the same time appreciating their need to be connected to their friends. We are also urging them–with mixed success–to get back to their school sleep schedule, which will be important come Monday. Finally, we are working with each of them to create a space in the house where they can be productive in the coming days and weeks. I know that all of our situations are unique so please reach out to us, and to each other, as we all make this transition together.
Our priority for this week has been the health and safety of our community and getting our remote learning program up and running. Next week we will begin to focus on what an extended period of remote learning might look like and how we will manage all of the events that typically happen in the spring. As we make those decisions, we will be sure to seek parent and student input, especially for the class of 2020.
I also wanted to give a brief update on how long this period might last. I know that as of this morning, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine are each communicating slightly different messages which we will continue to monitor. Our current plan has us working in this mode through April 17, and we will plan to update you each week through our normal weekly communication. Ultimately, I am confident that the strength of the Berwick community will carry us through these challenging times. Please do not hesitate to reach out directly with any questions or concerns.
