A Culture of Innovation

Berwick Academy fosters a unique culture of innovation that is evident in all facets of the School. Through our curriculum, classroom instruction, our nationally recognized Berwick Innovation Center, the Innovation Pursuit program, Inspiration Commons facility, and responsive administration, we are able to be deliberate in our path to becoming one of the most innovative PK-12 day schools.

In the classroom, Berwick is making a move toward a more student-directed, skills-based approach that encourages collaborative and interdisciplinary work among faculty and students. Student-directed, skills-based learning puts a focus on knowing through doing. Individual academic departments are developing advanced topics courses with an increased emphasis on actual research, interdisciplinary connections, and grappling with real-world problems.

Pinnacle Program

By 2020, Berwick will no longer be placing an “AP” designation on our academic transcripts, with our commitment to student-directed, skills-based learning as a catalyst to this decision. We are hopeful that this decision will give our teachers more freedom in their curriculum and the ability to go more in depth in their instruction. Over the next three years, we will roll out our new Pinnacle Program to replace the AP Program.
As the most rigorous academic offerings at Berwick Academy, pinnacle courses are guided by the understanding that rigor is not defined by the text, it comes from what students do; it is not standard across a curriculum, it is individual to each student; it is not quantified by how much gets crammed into a school day, it is measured in depth of understanding. Pinnacle courses encourage students to confront ideas and problems that are authentic (i.e. real world), stretch their thinking, unleash their sophistication, and foster an appreciation of deep knowledge.

Berwick Innovation Center

Established in 2009, the  Berwick Innovation Center (BIC) has evolved into a program that encompasses all aspects of innovation on our campus. Elements of BIC include our flagship Innovation Pursuit (IP) program, the Middle School MakerspaceLower School Innovation Jr., Innovation Pursuits BEYOND BERWICK, and now Inspiration Commons.
