Message from the Head of School

Welcome to Berwick Academy –
As we start a new year on the Hilltop, I want to thank you for choosing to explore Berwick Academy through this website. We hope that you find its images, videos, and words to be a transparent glimpse into what makes this community so special. My wife Amy and I feel so blessed that all three of our daughters are members of the Berwick Academy Lower and Middle Schools. With our family now having lived on campus for 11 years, we are more appreciative than ever of the transformational nature of the Berwick experience.
While we are incredibly proud of Berwick’s history, we are even more excited about its future. Our Innovation programming continues to thrive on campus. Last year, we opened Inspiration Commons in our Jackson Library – an innovative space where collaboration and student-directed learning takes individual passions from ideas to fruition. The Innovation Pursuits Beyond Berwick program invites external students to work with a mentor in developing their passion and provides an opportunity to present their findings on a large stage. Additionally, The Walsh Wellness Center at Oakes House honors our commitment to forming holistically strong graduates. We believe by tackling issues like nutrition, stress, mental health, and academic support, our alumni will be more able to succeed in a complex world. Finally, we are also proud of our work to create a diverse and inclusive community through the guidance of our Director of Cultural Competency. We know that every student in this community needs to be prepared to handle a global world. Skills like empathy, listening, and a willingness to change will be essential for their success.
With all that is new here, there is much that remains unchanged. At the core of the Berwick experience remains the remarkable connections made between students and faculty. Class sizes are limited, which allows our teachers to know relatively small groups of students exceptionally well. This faculty/student ratio is the structural catalyst for the powerful mentoring relationships that occur on campus. As always, our commitment to top-flight college preparation through skills like writing, communication, and critical thinking remains omnipresent in what we do.
In the end, our community feels more focused than ever on our mission of “promoting virtue and useful knowledge to the rising generations.” As teachers, we eagerly embrace our role in shaping the values, character, and leadership skills of our students in addition to their academic preparation. After you have had a chance to peruse this site, I strongly encourage you to come visit our campus to see the experience in person. I look forward to meeting you at some point in your Berwick journey. Thank you for taking a deeper look into this unique learning community.

Hap Ridgway told me when I took over as head of school a decade ago that graduation was the moment when heads of school were paid back for all of the challenging aspects of the job. This was sage counsel from a good friend and mentor, and I can now vouch with confidence that he was right. Having a chance to be a part of Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School graduations each spring reminds me so clearly of why we do what we do. We are privileged to play some small part of moving these amazing children on their collective journey toward becoming such accomplished adults.
