Lower School Literacy

Essential Question:
What skills are necessary for students to become proficient, engaged, life-long readers?

Skills and Enduring Understandings:
The Lower School literacy teachers assess students several times per year to discover areas of strength, weaknesses and overall reading behaviors.  We use the assessments to drive our instruction. Students at Berwick Academy are placed in small groups at their appropriate instructional  reading level.  They are exposed to high quality books and lessons that are planned around students’ skill levels and needs.  Students read and discuss a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as plays that can be used for Reader’s Theater performances.  Our goal is to use these materials in conjunction with targeted instruction to foster excitement and a lifelong love of reading.
