The Upper School is the culmination of the Berwick experience, where students’ achievement leads to strong results in higher education at colleges and universities. The demanding Upper School curriculum is organized around established academic disciplines, and rounded out by a variety of fine arts courses. Whether our students are in math or history class, they are encouraged to ask questions, form ideas and opinions, and build on acquired knowledge. Our students cultivate a more sophisticated understanding of topics through this method of learning.
 
What leads to academic success? There is not any one correct path each student must take; but certainly, there are common themes for achievement. Our most successful students interact with teachers and their peers in class. They take their course work seriously and invest critical time to ask the questions and challenge the answers. We teach our students to think analytically and critically, then apply their knowledge.
 
Berwick values and appreciates creative and imaginative thought within the experience. Students are provided the time and place to explore individual areas of passion or those topics covered in class. We are a division with incredibly diverse talents, and the determination to provide ‘useful knowledge’ to the leaders of tomorrow.

By 2020, Berwick will no longer be placing an “AP” designation on our academic transcripts, with our commitment to student-directed, skills-based learning as a catalyst to this decision. We are hopeful that this decision will give our teachers more freedom in their curriculum and the ability to go more in depth in their instruction. Over the next three years, we will roll out our new Pinnacle Program to replace the AP Program. 
 
As the most rigorous academic offerings at Berwick Academy, pinnacle courses are guided by the understanding that rigor is not defined by the text, it comes from what students do; it is not standard across a curriculum, it is individual to each student; it is not quantified by how much gets crammed into a school day, it is measured in depth of understanding. Pinnacle courses encourage students to confront ideas and problems that are authentic (i.e. real world), stretch their thinking, unleash their sophistication, and foster an appreciation of deep knowledge.
