Kelly Martin
I first joined the Lower School at Berwick Academy in 1993 and taught kindergarten and helped to develop the kindergarten into a full day program. I then taught second grade for many years before moving to third grade and my current teaching position in the Lower School. I have taught at Berwick for more than twenty years, though I first came to Berwick Academy when my husband, Ted Sherbahn, began teaching English in the Upper School in 1989. Our children, Jim, Class of 2010, and Stephen, Class of 2014, both graduated from Berwick Academy and have journeyed through Berwick Academy with us over the years. My teaching experiences extend beyond South Berwick, ME and include pre-k and Lower School up to Middle School Math, Upper School Economics and Math, and I have even worked with adults--teaching and mentoring the interns and apprentices here at Berwick Academy. Besides teaching, I enjoy taking long walks, running, working in my garden, and reading books, especially children’s picture books.
What is your favorite lesson to teach?
My favorite part of being a Lower School teacher at Berwick Academy is reading aloud to children. I love to collect and read picture books and I am always looking for new books that are fun to share with second and third graders. Many of these books are funny, have a positive message, or help us learn more about what we are studying in class. I also enjoy reading chapter books to my students. It is always a pleasure to read a story aloud with my class and share it for a longer period of time, getting to know each character, recalling our favorite parts, and simply having a good laugh together.
Why do you love teaching Second and Third Grade?
Second and third grader students are simply the best! These seven, eight and nine year olds look forward to coming to school each day. They are eager to learn and school is a happy place to be. It is such a pleasure for me to share in their learning and discovery each and every day. And they know how to have fun while learning!

How do you define great teaching?
Great teaching is sharing a passion and learning alongside your students. Every day my students teach me so many new things. Mostly they teach me about themselves and each other, but we also learn about how to write sentences to express what we mean, discover new and interesting facts about the United States, find different ways to solve a math problem, think of ways to cheer up a friend, ask questions or just wonder about the world.

What is your favorite thing about the Lower School?
My favorite part about the Berwick Academy Lower School is that it is a kind, caring and safe place to learn and discover. I am fortunate to be a part of a community that encourages every individual (both teachers and students) to be and to do their best.
