Jeoff Jarnot

Teacher Profile:
Upon graduating from Colby College, I moved down to Nashville, TN as an aspiring musician. This fun adventure only lasted so long and I returned north to earn my Masters in Elementary Education. I joined the Berwick community in the fall of 2015. Having grown up in New York, Illinois, and New Hampshire, it wasn’t until I attended my first private school (Avon Old Farms) in tenth grade that I understood and appreciated the value of an independent school like Berwick. In the summer, I love golfing, playing music, and spending time on the beach with my wife. In the winter, I spend a lot of time at the hockey rink coaching the Boys Varsity team. Between teaching and coaching, I have had the privilege of working with over 1,000 children, teens, and their families. I love helping young people realize and reach their potentials. We are all students, and if we get 1% better every day, we are headed in the right direction!

Why do you love teaching Third Grade?
Third graders keep asking great questions like they did the year prior, and with increased intellectual independence, they start to find answers. These discoveries become meaningful when students make connections to prior knowledge. Working with students this age is a truly gratifying experience, especially when you help students find and/or dive deeply into a passion. This scaffolding of passion pursuits is a strength of ours as a school, and it's a pleasure to play my part.

How do you define great teaching?
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” -William Butler Yeats. We get to spend a lot of time with our students; 35 hours per week to be exact. But what do they do with the other 133 hours each week? Great teaching inside the classroom leads to a lifetime of learning outside the classroom.

What is your classroom motto or theme?
My Classroom Theme is: Experiment. Fail. Learn. Repeat.
My students and I have decided that our classroom motto is "we're not here to be average, we are here to be AWESOME!"

What is your favorite thing about the Berwick Lower School?
I have two favorite things. Every Friday morning we get together for Community Meeting. This gathering of children ages 3-10 is a really special way to close each week. And I have to include lunch! Teachers don’t gather in a faculty lunchroom or hunker down in their classrooms –they eat with their kids. That is how you know the Lower School is the real deal!
