Berwick comes back twice but Tabor too much in the end

Tyler Gaulin heats up with two goals and Rafe Gaughan continues strong net play

MARION, MA –The 9:00 p.m. puck drop had the Tabor Seawolves and their home fans fired up, as they came out of the gates hot last night. Tabor controlled much of the early possession in Berwick’s end. Despite the lopsided period, Rafe Gaughan (Somersworth, NH) continued his strong play in net for the visiting Bulldogs. The period ended tied 0-0.

In the second, Tabor put two goals home by the midway point. Berwick senior tri-captain Jack “Rex” Merecki (Stratham, NH) picked the boys up with a grinder, five-hole goal from a tough angle. A minute later, Tyler Gaulin (Kingston, NH) knotted things at two. Fellow sophomores Zander Lizotte (Scarborough, ME) and Connor Derby (Newburyport, MA) connected on a few sharp passes before Gaulin finished off a pretty catch-and-shoot sequence. Gaulin almost scored his second of the period late when he went in alone on Tabor’s keeper and deked him patiently, buying enough time to go high and hitting the crossbar. Gaughan once again closed the door, and while we still do not have the official shot count, he may have faced thirty-five shots in the first two periods alone. Berwick and Tabor went into the locker rooms tied at two.

Tabor struck ninety seconds into the third from a tight angle, and it was back to work for Berwick. Jackson Sidford (Newburyport, MA) earned a breakaway but his five-hole bid fell short. Minutes later, Gaulin again found himself alone with the goalie, and this time he buried it top shelf for the tying goal. Tabor managed to strike again with seven minutes remaining, and they held the Bulldogs at bay the rest of the way, potting an empty netter to seal this one 5-3.

Playing without top defenseman Tanner Derby and center Ryan Gaulin did not make this one easy on Berwick, nor did losing another player twenty minutes in on a hit to the head. Bouncing back against Pomfret this morning will be a tall task, too. Berwick will call upon a few younger players to fill these roles. Keep an eye on Twitter for the 12:30 opening faceoff.
