Rox Latin downs Berwick 6-1 last night as Bulldogs head into the New Year

Young Bulldogs team enters second half with a 6-7-1 record
WEST ROXBURY, MA –Playing their third game in twenty-five hours, the Bulldogs came out hard in the first eight minutes last night, generating three grade-A chances and earning a penalty shot. Roxbury Latin junior goalie Mikey Jones was up to the task early and often, with Berwick finally breaking his shutout with 1:45 remaining in the game. The boys held a 25-16 shots advantage on the night but some defensive zone miscues did them in.

After Berwick’s barrage of chances early, Roxbury Latin settled in and scored three times to finish the first period. RL won the second period 2-0 before both teams battled to a 1-1 third.

In looking back on the first half, it is easy to point out key injuries that have limited Berwick’s depth. With that said, championships are won in the doldrums of a New England January, where Berwick plays a modest total of seven games –the same number they played in the last two tournaments combined. January success comes down to preparation. Fortunately, the Bulldogs have time on their side with three practices to every game this month.

This young team should be proud of their accomplishments thus far, and optimistic about what the second half brings. Berwick’s two seniors have played a pivotal role in providing grit, and the robust junior class has packed a lot of punch. Meanwhile, some ninth and tenth graders are really starting to show promise.

The Bulldogs enjoy a quiet week ahead before playing Holderness on Wednesday, January 9. To our loyal readers, Happy New Year!
