SOUTH BERWICK, MAINE — Berwick Academy is actively planning for a return to on-campus learning for students this fall and is creatively using its expansive campus to provide flexibility and physical distancing for both academic and extracurricular activities.

Because of Berwick’s culture of innovation, the administration has been committed to finding creative and nimble ways to safely reopen campus this fall. In addition to its existing academic space, Berwick Academy is also setting up a 24,000 square foot tent in the heart of campus as a contingency plan to hold activities outdoors amid the coronavirus pandemic. The tent will be equipped with power, heat, and Wi-Fi and will enable students and faculty to be better spaced.

The School is investing significantly in numerous other safety measures and planning to take advantage of their 80 acres of outdoor space. Berwick is upgrading its building air purification. Each classroom space is being outfitted with a system designed to filter the air four times per hour. These units utilize exterior, carbon, and HEPA filters. Additionally, buildings with air handling systems will be upgraded to a more robust MERV-13 filter, far exceeding state guidelines.

Berwick already has an emerging nature-based curriculum in its Lower School that takes advantage of its expansive fields and woodlands. Faculty are actively planning additional ways to take learning outdoors.

The fall semester will begin September 2, and according to Head of School, Jim Hamilton, “We are very focused on transitioning our students and faculty back to in-person instruction thoughtfully and carefully. Our Return to School Plan is comprehensive, and we are also equally prepared for a successful transition to our remote learning program if that becomes necessary. Berwick Academy fosters a culture of innovation with our faculty, students, and community. It is a natural progression to carry that inventiveness and flexibility as we prepare for the fall.”

There are limited openings for new students for the 2020-2021 school year. To learn more about how Berwick Academy is planning for the fall, please view the Return to School Plan - https://www.berwickacademy.org/return-to-school
