Bulldogs Win Big in Home Opener

The Bulldogs came out strong and focused and dominated in their home opener vs Hebron Academy, coming away with a 7-0 win

In the first three minutes of the game, Berwick had two solid shots on goal- from Chili Dowd (Amesbury, MA) and Lily Pleau (Hampton Falls, NH).  Sophia Whitney (Hampton, NH) opened the scoring off a corner kick from Phoebe Clark (Hampton, NH) with a great shot to the top corner in the 8th minute.  Moments later, Grace Libby (Standish, ME) held up the ball, played Lily Pleau (Hampton Falls, NH) out wide, Lily crossed the ball across the goal, and Grace knocked it in the net to increase the lead.  This gave the Bulldogs a boost of confidence which they carried through the rest of the game. In the 21st minute Sophia Whitney (Hampton, NH) made a great run down the left side of the field and her cross/shot went just wide past striker Ginger Friedman (North Hampton, NH) who almost got there to increase the Bulldog lead.  With nine minutes left in the first half, Leah Zaheer (West Newbury, MA), made a graceful high shot off a pass from Bella Mazza (Madbury, NH) forcing the Hebron goalie to jump and punch the ball out.  With five minutes to go, Phoebe Clark (Hampton, NH) weaves her way past a few defenders and passed the ball to Adie Schroeck (Kittery Point, ME) who scored her first career goal with a solid left footed finish.  Closing the first half, with only three minutes remaining, Phoebe Clark (Hampton NH) tapped it into the goal off an assist from Sophia Whitney (Hampton, NH) who had carried it down the left side of the field which increased the Bulldogs lead 4-0 going into the halftime break.

The Bulldogs came out equally strong in the second half and looked to possess the ball more and play quicker.  Phoebe Clark scored off a penalty kick after the Bulldogs were awarded the spot kick after an unintentional hand ball.  Grace Libby (Standish, ME) took the ball out of the air, passed it to Phoebe Clark (Hampton, NH), who then passed it to Reese Murphy (Stratham, NH) who made a beautiful left- footed shot to the right side of the goal.  In the final 7 minutes of the game, Bella Mazza (Madbury, NH) made a one touch shot and goal off a pass from Sophia Whitney (Hampton, NH).

Overall, the Bulldogs went home tired after a weekend of back- to- back matches, but satisfied by their current 1-0-1 record.  Cam Hamilton (South Berwick, ME) and Louise Roper (Kennebunkport, ME) combined for the shutout. The Bulldogs host Tilton School this Wednesday, September 15 at 3:30pm.  Go Bulldogs!
