Support Berwick

Thank you for your interest in supporting this exceptional school.

The Bill and Kathryn Matthews Memorial Fund

Providing access to a high quality independent school experience can be life changing for students. Supporting middle- and low-income families is a challenge for almost any independent school, where resources are often less abundant than need. The Bill and Kathryn Matthews Memorial Fund was established to help meet that need.

For the past three years alumnus, Dick Shafner ‘65, and his wife, Janet Eustis, have made gifts to support the full tuition of one Matthews Scholar each academic year. Students enter Berwick in Grade 4 and the scholarship will follow them until graduation.

Long-term financial sustainability of this program is not only a priority for Dick and Jan, but is also a priority for Berwick Academy. For the 2018-2019 academic year, Dick and Jan pledged a $25,000 match for funds raised towards The Matthews Fund. Thanks to the support of many, the match was realized, raising over $70,000 for this transformative program. These funds set a foundation for the program and are invested into The Bill and Kathryn Matthews Memorial Fund in the Berwick Academy Endowment.
We are delighted to announce that Dick Shafner '65 and his wife Jan Eustis, for the second year in a row, have pledged another $25,000 match for funds raised, dollar for dollar up to $25,000. Thanks to the generous support of many, we have almost reached this goal.

Dear Berwick Community,

Berwick Academy has a long tradition of philanthropy that began when the Chadbourne family created a land grant to establish the Academy in 1791, making it the oldest secondary school in Maine. Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, the school has been able to advance its mission of providing “virtue and useful knowledge among the rising generations” for 227 years.
Berwick’s vision is to become nationally known for providing a unique experience of excellence at a school that promotes the seacoast values of humility, balance, and authenticity.
The school continues to need your support to provide an excellent experience to its students by providing the highest quality teaching staff, facilities, and program.

Our history of philanthropy continues and we encourage your participation. We have a robust annual giving program - The Berwick Fund - that is critical to providing the Berwick experience to our students. Our commitment to building the endowment in order to ensure that Berwick is able to continue to serve many generations to come also needs your support. Thank you for your investment in and commitment to Berwick Academy. This truly is a remarkable place.

Sincerely,

Amy Smucker
