Student Life

Movement Pillar

As a complement to Berwick’s robust athletic program, the Wellness Center houses a beautiful new yoga studio that allows the community to explore different types of fitness classes, stretching, meditation, and mindfulness practices to improve the community’s sense of well-being. In a school that moves at a fast pace and asks its community members to do the same, this studio provides a unique space in which to pause, reflect, and grow.

Movement Programs

At Berwick, the physical education and athletic experience is something students take part in on a daily basis. Berwick Academy believes that athletics is an integral part of the total educational experience. Competent instructors and coaches, positive role models, and opportunities to advance skills and explore new sports stimulate our K-12 athletic program. With increased and new-found confidence and esteem, Berwick students develop sound minds, bodies, and attitudes.

K-12 Dance
The dance program seeks to educate intellectually, artistically, physically, and socially through the medium of dance. The curriculum in all three divisions provides students with avenues for technical and creative development. Dance is approached as a collaborative venture for any and all students with an emphasis on interactive skills, discovery, and courage.

K-12 Yoga Program
Students practice yoga in the studio at the Wellness Center. In the Upper School, yoga is offered as an afternoon activity option. Middle School students have the opportunity to take yoga during the winter sports season and Lower School students are exposed to yoga through various class initiatives. Faculty and staff enjoy a yoga option throughout the year as well.

Lower School Yoga 4 Classrooms (Y4C)
The Y4C (Yoga 4 Classrooms) curriculum is focused on physical, social, emotional, and attentional self-regulating strategies and skills, developed to systematically cultivate well-being, resilience and lifelong learning. Y4C features 67 yoga and mindfulness-based activities, divided into six categories: Let’s Breathe, At Your Desk, Stand Strong, Loosen Up, Imagination Vacation, and Be Well. The goal of Y4C is to create peaceful, productive, learning-ready classrooms in which students will learn to use yoga and mindfulness to improve their focus while developing a lifelong awareness of the importance of their physical and emotional health. Each week, the Lower School faculty reviews 3 new yoga activities together and these are then shared in each homeroom classroom and within exploration classes. At the end of the week, one class leads a Y4C activity with the whole Lower School in our Friday Community Meeting. The shared implementation of Y4C within the Lower School has promoted a cohesiveness among teachers and students and has enabled the children to be ready to learn in a positive, safe and supportive school environment.
