Berwick Academy Announces New Hires for the 2026-27 School Year

The Hilltop is getting ready to welcome a dynamic group of educators, innovators, and mentors to our community for the 2026-27 school year. Bringing a wealth of global experience, a passion for student-centered learning, and impressive educational backgrounds, this year’s cohort of faculty and coaches will enrich our classrooms, studios, and athletic venues across all three divisions.
The Upper School will welcome Sherry Hu as the new Mandarin teacher bridging a tremendous energy and collaborative spirit to the World Languages department. Hu has taught high school and college-level Mandarin at Bonny Eagle and the University of Southern Maine. Prior to discovering her passion for education, she was a journalist for the Chengdu Daily News in China. She earned her B.S. in Education Development at the University of Maine, Machias and M.Ed. in Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction and M.S. in Higher and Adult Education from Southern Maine.

Grace Genest steps into the role of Upper School Operations Coordinator, arriving from the Sporting Club of Jacksonville where she served as Partnerships and Marketing Coordinator. Genest is familiar with independent schools, graduating from the Frederick Gunn School and spending a year coaching field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse at Greenwich Country Day School. She earned her B.A. in Sports Science and Business Management and M.S. in Sports and Entertainment Business Management at Manhattanville University.

Andrea Allen, a familiar face on campus, is making a strategic shift to the Middle School where she’ll teach a combination of seventh and eighth grade math, bringing her invaluable perspective of teaching Upper School Precalculus to the Middle School level and helping with the transition to ninth grade. She will serve as an advisor, lead the math team, and coach our winter outdoor education program.

Jess Andrews comes to Berwick having spent the last several years teaching in the Lowell Public School system. She will teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade studio art and brings ten years of museum and makerspace leadership to Berwick, having managed the summer camps at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. She will also serve as an advisor, lead the after school MS art team, and support theater productions. She holds a B.F.A. in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Christine Hodgdon joins the team to anchor our Middle School Physical Education and Wellness curriculum. Focused on the holistic health, teamwork, and physical literacy of our emerging adolescents, Hodgdon will guide students in building healthy lifelong habits both in the gym and out in the community.

Our youngest Bulldogs will be greeted by exceptional early childhood educators and dedicated literacy and math mentors this fall, ensuring our foundational division continues to thrive:

  • Jenny Boches – Shifting from long-term Kindergarten substitute to our Pre-K 4 classroom.
  • Christy Bate – Joining our Pre-K 3 classroom.
  • Kate Macleod – Our new Lower School Librarian, ready to foster a lifelong love of reading and discovery from our students' very first steps on campus.
Following an extraordinary year of athletic achievements and record-breaking performances, Berwick continues to invest in full time faculty and staff who bring expertise to the sports world as well. Here are our new Upper School coaches:

  • Field Hockey: Jessi Paul (head coach) and Grace Genest
  • Girls Lacrosse: Jill Mountford (head coach) and Christine Hodgdon
  • Boys Lacrosse: Nate McLellan
  • Rowing: Melinda Neale
  • Alpine Skiing: Gunnar Stecher
We look forward to welcoming our new faculty and coaches to the Hilltop community this fall!
