In a fitting end to a season marked by ups and downs, the Berwick Academy Bulldogs fought their canine counterparts from Worcester’s Bancroft School to a one-one draw in South Berwick Friday afternoon. Before the game reached the five-minute mark Berwick found itself facing the short end of a one-zero scoreline, Bancroft finding the back of the net when Sheel Steuber knocked a wobbler over the diving Blaine Farrell.
Just as the score after 40 minutes reflected the tough first half of the season (1 – 8 – 1 during the opening month), the scrappy effort of the Berwick boys in the second half, working to gain and maintain possession, mirrored the team’s record over the last month (3 – 3 – 3). Marshall White pushed the pace forward, receiving a nicely weighted through ball from Stephen Terenzio only to have his attempt batted wide by the Bancroft keeper. A few minutes later it was White dishing to Terenzio, but the try sailed high. Berwick sustained the thrust, finally earning a free kick at three minutes to full time. When Jack McCraven served up a serious tater to Brendan Tribastone just inside the 18, the freshman midfielder fell to the turf before he could receive the ball. The official saw enough to put Tribastone on the stripe and the youngster equalized with a no-doubter.
Closing out their careers in the Berwick blue and white this afternoon were White, Terenzio, backfield stalwart Mark Hoyt, and captain Will Grant, a three year starter for the Bulldogs and the heart of this year’s squad. The leadership and guidance provided by this group during the 2014 campaign will surely be felt over the next few years as the crop of underclassmen develop and grow from the lessons learned this fall.
Thanks to the seniors, especially, but to all the boys on the team and the parents for a good season!
