Naomi Ellsworth

Teacher Profile:
My name is Naomi Ellsworth and I grew up in rural western Maine amongst the mountains and pines. I graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Art Education and minors in Art History, Studio Art, and Spanish. During my time at UMaine I also pursued an Honors Thesis exploring how art teachers can encourage creativity in their students, which has continued to influence my philosophy of teaching. I was lucky enough to find Berwick Academy immediately after graduating and filled in as a long term substitute which eventually turned into the full time Lower School and 5th grade art teacher. I believe in teaching the elements and principles of art and design as a base level for creation through the following; Exploring how art functions, the issues and concepts surrounding it, the interdisciplinary nature of art, the valuable life skills inherently embedded in creating, and the creative process of making- all through a multicultural and historically diverse lense.

Why do you love teaching your specific age?
Pre-K through 5th Grade is a wide range of ages, but I think that is the beauty of my job. Each age group has their own magic and curiosity for the world.

What defines a great teacher?
To me, great teachers cultivate a love for learning, an appreciation for mistakes, and a creative attitude- all while designing meaningful lessons, and loving what they do.

What is your favorite lesson to teach?
Our "What Lifts You?" Lesson is probably my favorite, I love to see kids draw what makes them happy.

What is your classroom motto?
The important thing is to create.

What is your favorite thing about teaching in the Berwick Lower School?
Although I haven't been in the Berwick Lower School for very long, I love the culture of curiosity, acceptance, and creativity. It feels like a space to make mistakes, ask questions, and get a little messy.
