  • Innovator Development Camp | July 9-13

    Dates: July 9-13
    Times: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
    Grades: Entering 4-7
Cost: $425, includes lunch and materials

Innovator Development Camp takes place in the Inspiration Commons at Berwick Academy’s Jackson Library - a dynamic space where our community connects thru reading, writing, playing, designing, making and sharing.  At Innovator Development Camp, participants build confidence in the process of fabricating creative solutions to problems through laser cutting, 3D printing, coding, soldering, sewing, and/or old fashioned woodworking/crafting skills.  Each day kicks off with a collaborative design challenge where campers work in small teams to design and build structures to solve simple, fun problems (i.e. build a device out of paper to propel a ping pong ball forward, construct a parachute for a Star Wars action figure, or create a kinetic sculpture with hot wheels track and found objects).  Collaborative design challenges are followed by morning and afternoon workshops facilitated by Berwick teachers and upper school student mentors.

    Workshops include…
    • Wright Stuff - design and test various flying contraptions
    • Strandbeests - build miniature models of Theo Jansen’s beests
    • Pinball Wizard - construct your own tabletop pinball machine
    • Robotics and Coding - practice programming Lego, Dash and Dot, Digital Sandbox and/or Hummingbird robotics equipment
    • Old School Electronics - learn to solder and make your own Simon game and electronic dice
    • Operation - create interactive board games with Scratch and Makey Makey
    • To the Moon... - explore the physics of air powered rockets by landing your craft on the moon target
    • Vinyl Timepiece - design and build your own clock using an old record as the backdrop
    • Fiber Arts and Needle Felting - practice your skills with a sewing machine or use wool to create unique fuzzy critters
    • DIY Buddha Board - get your zen on and use the laser cutter to create a canvas for water painting
    • Raingutter Regatta - explore the hydrodynamics and physics of model sailboats
    • Choose Your Own Adventure - use Twine to write and program creative stories with multiple endings
    • XYZ Studio - design and create a personalized storage box with Tinkercad, a 3D printer and a laser cutter
Note: For planning purposes, campers will be asked to select their top 5 workshop choices when they register.

The camp day concludes with flex time which may be used for quiet reading, project work in the Fabrication Studio, board game play in the Hub, or modeling and/or coding in the Design Classroom.  On the final afternoon, campers will host an open house where they will share their accomplishments with the community.
