Phillips Exeter kept it close, but ultimately couldn’t survive the Bulldog onslaught, as the Women’s team took a huge win of 103 to 67 while the mens’ team picked up another win, 91-79. The women are 3-1, and the boys have started undefeated again with a 3-0 record.
The Berwick Mens’ and Womens’ Swim team headed down to Phillips Exeter on Wednesday for an afternoon meet against Phillips Exeter’s JV squad. There was a strong Berwick fan turnout, which included a large number of parents, Headmaster Greg Schnieder, Math teacher Mrs. Maddock, and Berwick Alums Benn Clapp ‘14, and former four year swimmer Eliza Hazen ‘13.
The meet started off on the right foot, as the womens’ 200 Medley A Relay of Emma Twombly ‘19, Chloe Suttie ‘20, Emma Whall ‘18, and Tess McNamara ‘18 took first place by a long shot. Close in 4th and 5th were Berwick’s B and C Relays with Sammie Gaudette ‘17, Kieran Friel ‘17, Abby Donaghue ‘15, Erin Sullivan ‘18 and Sarah Ewart ‘17, Ainsley Clapp ‘18, Sarah Yanofsky ‘15, and Olivia Hutchins ‘17. The mens’ 200 Medley A Relay of Thomas Anderson ‘16, Ethan Garstka ‘18, Drew Macdonald ‘16, and Alex Bouvier ‘19 continued the first place streak, finishing first by more seven seconds. Berwick’s second relay in the event finished fourth, and was made up of Teddy Vatcher ‘17, Brady Altschiller ‘19, Finn Halstead ‘20, and Seif Abdelrahman ‘18.
In the 200 Free, BA’s Amelia Snyder ‘17 won by almost fifteen seconds. Alexa Mocklis ‘18 finished in a tight race for third, but came away ahead of PEA’s other two competitors. Erin Sullivan finished in 6th and Sammie Gaudette in 7th, rounding out a bunch of points for the womens’ team. The berwick men pulled out a big 1-2 thanks to Gage Anderson ‘16 and Ethan Gartka ‘18. Altschiller also finished 6th in the race.
In the 200 IM, Emma Whall, Sophie Bravo, Abby Donoghue, and Ainsley Clapp finished first, second, fifth, and 7th respectively. The other competitors were basically eating their bubbles. On the mens’ side Bouvier got a best time ever en route to a win, Aaron Fleisher ‘17 came in second just behind him, and Halstead finished in 6th.
In the splash and dash (50 Yard Free), Isabel Reis took first, while Sarah Yanofsky Sarah Ewart ‘17, and Olivia Hutchins ‘17 took 5th, 6th and 7th respectively. For the men Macdonald finished first, Vatcher swam his fastest 50 ever at 26.50 to take fourth, and Abdelrahman broke the 30 second barrier for his first time finishing sixth.
The 100 Fly was a major event for the bulldogs. Snyder, McNamara, and Mocklis took the first three spots and outplaced all of the opponents. It was a great race to watch. For the boys Alex Bouvier picked up his second win of the day, again in personal best time, winning the with a time of 1:03.38. G. Anderson took third, while Hans Morris ‘17 overcame his fear of butterfly and finished his first ever 100 Fly, finishing fourth.
In the 100 Free, Whall and Twombly, both mere freshman, rocked the field as they placed first and second. Friel and Ewart took 6th and 7th place, out placing many of the competitors. For men, Garstka took third place, just missing second place by two tenths of a second in a hard fought race. Jack McCraven ‘17 took fourth, and Altshiller took fifth.
In the 500 Free, Reis and Bravo both finished at least thirty seconds ahead of the other competitors. Bravo with a best time under her belt, had a well deserved celebration after her race. Suttie and Donoghue finished 5th and 7th, respectively. The men showcased their strong distance talent as Berwick swept the field, with Macdonald, T. Anderson, and Vatcher went 1-2-3 in that order.
In the 200 Free Relay, the B Relay of Gaudette, Sullivan, Hutchins, and Friel caught third place in a close race against the first two finishers. Ewart, Camille Hoge ‘18, Yanofsky, and Clapp took 4th, not far behind their fellow teammates. The guys came a close second to PEA, as the relay team of Bouvier, Morris, Fleischer, and G. Anderson finished second by half a second, despite a valiant anchor leg by Anderson. Berwick also took fourth in the relay with the team of Abdelrahman, Altschiller, McCraven, and Halstead. McCraven split a 28.06, his fastest 50 yet.
McNamara took first place in the 100 Back by a long shot, with a killer time of 1:06.84. Gaudette finished in a close fourth, while Hoge took fifth. Yanofsky raced hard in her first ever 100 of backstroke as well. Despite having swum the 500 Free less than fifteen minutes earlier, T. Anderson turned around and won the 100 Backstroke for the boys by more than fourteen seconds. He also missed his own team record by just over a second.
In the 100 Breaststroke, Suttie, Twombly, Friel and Hutchins attained a number of points for the BA team. Suttie, only in 7th grade, beat out all the other competitors. On the mens’ side Fleischer swam in strong field and nabbed third, with Hans Morris finishing in fifth.
To finish an already very successful meet, BA women’s A and B 400 Free Relay took first and second, easily placing ahead of all the PEA relay teams. The boys finished off the day taking first and third in the relay, with Flesicher, Macdonald, and the Anderson boys (no relation) getting the win. The self dubbed “goon” relay took third, and was helped by Vatcher’s first sub 1:00 100 free, and also had strong swims by Morris, McCraven, and Garstka.
As a pack of bulldogs, we dare any team in New England to challenge us. Bring it on!
Shoutout to Ainsley Clapp and Sarah Yanofsky who showed extreme strength when they both continued to race hard and fast for the team, although they experienced the terrible mishap of losing their goggles. Also to Alex Bouvier, who won his first two events in convincing fashion, and Teddy Vatcher, who showed his strong versatility in the freestyle events, helping from the 50 all the way to the 500.
Berwick next takes on Landmark, Pingree, and Kents Hill 6:00 pm on Friday the 23rd at UNH. Come out and show your support!
