World Languages and Cultures

As an eighth grader, Berwick Academy language students begin the second half of the Beginning/Level I curriculum. Like in seventh grade, there is a major review of concepts from the previous year in order to accommodate new students to Berwick Academy. These concepts are continually reinforced throughout the eighth grade year.
Beyond the fundamentals of learning a language, teachers find innovative ways to blend diversity, culture, art, creativity, travel, media literacy, history, and project-based learning into the curriculum. Returning students begin the year at a Novice Mid-High proficiency level on the ACTFL scale. By the end of the eighth grade year, students are consistently performing at Novice High in all four skill areas and are developmentally ready to move into the Intermediate level upon entering the Upper School.
