Berwick Wins First Game of Prep Cup

Berwick Academy travelled to North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) for the first game of the Travis Roy Maine Girls Prep Cup. The bulldogs are the defending champions (games also count for regular season records). NYA struck first mid-way through the 1st period. Undeterred, Julia Cabral would record her first of the game on an unassisted breakaway. NYA would again go ahead early in the 3rd. With back-and-forth opportunities in both directions Berwick goalie Bella Pomarico turned away opportunities making 28 saves and kept Berwick in the hunt. The Berwick penalty kill was busy throughout the game fending off 7 penalties, including a 5v3 opportunity for NYA. As minutes ticked away, Berwick remained composed and it would be Cabral again to notch the equalizer on an assist from Ella Martin, who has been a versatile player for the bulldogs both as reliable blue-liner and a shot of energy for the forecheck. Due to strong forechecking, Berwick was able to force a face-off in the NYA zone and Cabral secured the hat trick with 0.1 left on the clock giving the Bulldogs a win in dramatic fashion. Berwick will face Kents Hill school tomorrow morning for game 2 of the tournament.
