Concord Cashes In

Friday afternoon saw Berwick host a fast and talented Concord side, which only added to a catalogue of spirited contests between these two EIL rivals. The visitors got off to a strong start, and it took BA some time to settle in and match their strong and pacey play. With 20 minutes off the clock and having braved some of Concord's offensive bursts, BA began to keep the ball better and enjoy longer spells in the offensive area. The second half saw the hosts push forward time and again, with good attack from both Owen Small and Nii Lokko on the bench side. Gritty play in the midfield from Jack May and Liam Connolly continually turned back Concord's efforts in the central areas, and so it was the attack of Lucas Milne and Amir Makdad that showed promise that a goal could soon be coming. Nii smashing the cross bar followed by what seemed to be an easy penalty kick call only offered more hope. However, soccer can be a cruel game, and the evidence was there when a series of defensive miscues in quick succession allowed Concord's tricky forward to break in on the net and capitalize on one of the few lapses in the second half. While Berwick had an opportunity right at the very end, it was Concord who collected the points on this one. Full credit to Concord for their excellent play and great sportsmanship, and a shout out to our goalkeeping and defensive line who competed well all afternoon. Rematch to follow on the final game of the season in November!
