Elevating Engagement: Middle School Curriculum Drives Academic Excellence

Berwick Academy’s Middle School curriculum continues to garner praise for its dynamic, student-centered approach to the changing needs of early adolescents. In the 2026-27 school year, we are excited to announce a renewed focus on vertical alignment and depth particularly in the fifth and sixth grades.
A critical moment in a Berwick education, Grades 5 and 6 faculty take a collaborative approach to advance pedagogical consistency and more easily identify academic challenges or added support as necessary. Through restructuring, we are providing these formative years with a core, consistent group of faculty for both grade levels, including 2025-26 Dorothy Green Teacher of the Year recipient Jess Richardson, who will move from Lower to Middle School alongside this rising fifth grade class. By having the same Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and World Language teachers work with students across both fifth and sixth grade, we are able to leverage how well we know each child to ease their transition, create a familiar and supportive environment, and best prepare them for their academic journey ahead.

Berwick’s Middle School program successfully transitions students from the foundational learning of Lower School to the advanced analytical expectations of the Upper School. "Our goal is to make excellence a habit, not just a grade," says Director of Middle School Ryan Feeley. "We are teaching students how to think critically, question deeply, and take ownership of their intellectual journeys."
