Beyond Test Prep: How Berwick’s Pinnacle Courses Prepare Students for College and Future Success

Advanced academics at Berwick are designed to spark curiosity, encourage deep inquiry, and prepare students for the realities of higher education and an evolving global landscape. Several years ago, Berwick moved beyond traditional Advanced Placement (AP) courses to create Pinnacle Courses—our highest level of academic challenge.
Rather than teaching to a single standardized exam, Pinnacle courses empower Upper School students to engage in deep intellectual exploration, sophisticated analysis, and real-world problem-solving.
Cultivating the Human Skills for a Digital World
In an analysis published by Forbes, futurist Bernard Marr outlined the 20 most critical skills needed to succeed in a digital world. His core finding? While basic technical fluency is expected, the overwhelming majority of essential skills for future workplace success are human-centered soft skills—including critical thinking, complex decision-making, creativity, adaptability, and collaborative communication. As automation and AI increasingly handle routine tasks, higher education and global industries will demand thinkers who can analyze evidence, pivot fluidly, and solve unstructured problems.

This exact insight drives Berwick’s Pinnacle curriculum. By shifting away from rigid memorization, Pinnacle classes directly cultivate the uniquely human competencies required to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Click to expand the topics below for more information.

The Four Principles of Pinnacle Learning
Pinnacle learning is structured around four core principles that foster ownership, intellectual growth, and future-ready skills:
  1. Demonstrated Understanding: Admission to Pinnacle courses is earned through proven engagement and achievement in prerequisite coursework, ensuring students are ready for advanced study.
  2. Personalized Inquiry: Embedded choice allows scholars to align advanced coursework with their specific academic interests, passions, and prospective college majors.
  3. Professional-Level Assessment: Students showcase mastery through authentic, real-world demonstrations—presenting original research, curating art exhibitions, or defending portfolios before panels.
  4. Real-World Relevance: Learning extends well beyond the classroom walls through local and global community collaborations, internships, and immersive field experiences.
In the Classroom: Pinnacle & Advanced Course Highlights
Our Upper School students are diving deep into hands-on research, interdisciplinary analysis, and creative iteration across our Pinnacle and advanced academic disciplines:
  • Pinnacle Calculus (Ben McDermott): Scholars are preparing to apply integration to compute the 2D center of mass for various shapes. To test their mathematical calculations, students will physically balance their shapes on a precision fine-tip tester mounted on a sand-filled container. To hone their volume integration skills, the class will also compete in a "Price is Right"-style challenge, striving to predict exact volume calculations without going over.
  • Pinnacle Senior Studio Art (Raegan Russell): Guided by the theme Exploring Personal Voice, Senior Studio artists are developing cohesive bodies of work centered on a single personal concept. Over four to five weeks, students build material versatility and conceptual depth by expressing their core theme across three distinct media—progressing from relief printmaking to cyanotype and alternative photographic processes, and culminating in drawing, painting, or sculpture. (Note: Student artwork showcase pending teacher confirmation).
  • Pinnacle Analytical Chemistry (Jim Madonis): Students have spent the fall exploring the fundamental proportionality of chemical reactions. Hands-on laboratory investigations have included determining the empirical formula of an unknown copper compound, using light spectrophotometry to calculate solution concentrations, and applying titration techniques to analyze acid-base and precipitation reactions. Up next, students will transition into quantum mechanics and chemical bonding, featuring scientific writing, collaborative research, and the flame test lab.
  • We the People (Pete Lassey): Following an in-depth study of the American Revolution, students engaged in a formal academic debate examining the role of the U.S. Constitution in protecting and perpetuating slavery. Alternating between debaters honing rhetorical and public speaking skills and student judges asking probing cross-examination questions, scholars grappled with complex historical narratives through responsible, evidence-based discourse.
Two Pillars of Advanced Study & Course Roster
