Big Win Over Newton Country Day

The Bulldogs returned to league play in the Eastern Independent League with a 2-0 win over Newton Country Day School.  The Bulldogs created a lot of chances and in the 14th minute they got on the board when Adara Groman (Stratham NH) played a great ball over the top to Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) who made her way down the right flank and blasted the ball off the left post and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.  Newton had some good possesion in the Berwick defensive end but Berwick's defense was solid.  Berwick continued to play well but couldn't get a second goal with Newton's goalkeeper picking up most through balls.  In the 38th minute they had their best chance to increase the lead with a fury in the box after a shot from Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) deflected off the keeper and the ball bounced around the 6 yard box for what seemed liked 2-3 minutes.  The Bulldogs went into halftime up 1-0, and Newton came out strong in the second half.  Newton started to create more chances in the early part of the second half, including one effort that went off the crossbar.  Overall the Berwick defense of Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH), Adara Groman (Stratham, NH), Vanessa Leavitt (Haverhill, MA), Tess Varley (Portsmouth, NH), Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH), and Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) was solid all day with many key plays and clearances.  It wasn't until the 74th minute that the pressure was lifted when Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) dribbled around multiple Newton defenders broke into the 18 yard box and put the ball past a rushing Newton keeper for the insurance goal.  The Bulldogs improved to 7-3-1 and Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) earned the teams 6th shutout of the season with the 2-0 win.  The Bulldogs will host Pingree in another EIL league matchup on Wednesday 10/19 at 4pm.
