Teacher Profiles

Name:
Tim Platt

College/Grad School:
Princeton University (AB in American History; 1980); Dartmouth College (MALS (Master of Arts in Liberal Studies); 1992)

How long have you worked at Berwick Academy?
I'm in my 17th year at Berwick, but have been teaching for 36 years.

What inspired you to start teaching?
The flippant answer is, "I ruled out all the other possibilities." The more sincere answer is I had a lot of good role models in education: my father was a high school history teacher; my uncle was a college professor; my grandfather was headmaster at Chestnut Hill Academy and the Cambridge School.

What are three things you have with you at all times?
Crossword puzzles, binoculars for bird watching, and a copy of The Aeneid.

What is the last book you read?
"The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you:
I went to second grade in Cambridge England.

What is your favorite thing to do on your day off?
Either hiking or canoeing (after an early round of disc golf).

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
Working as the color commentator for Red Sox games. I could be the next Jerry Remy when he's ready to retire!

What achievement are you most proud of?
Raising our three wonderfully amazing children.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Eggs Benedict with a side of Blueberry Pancakes.

What is the best advice you've ever received?
A head of school who told me I should teach middle school. I was in my 10th year of teaching at the time and had only taught high school. It would be four more years before I followed his advice and that's the year I taught Molly Gabarro (then Molly Corkery and now an Upper School history teacher at Berwick) at Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, CT (1995). I've been teaching Middle School ever since.

What is your favorite thing about Berwick Academy?
The community. It's truly been a home for me and my family for the past 17 years. I only wish I had gotten here a little sooner, but I couldn't be happier with the years I've spent here.
