Berwick Falls Short at Home

Andersen Pickard
Dover, NH: The Berwick Academy Girls Varsity hockey team hosted Proctor Academy in a 4:30 p.m. match at the Dover Ice Arena. While the snow swirled and a mini-storm brewed outside, a different storm was going on inside the rink. This indoor bout saw Proctor secure a 6-5 win in a nail-biting effort.

Berwick opened the game with a goal just three minutes in as Charlotte Wensley secured a pass from Reese Murphy and snuck by a defender to notch the first goal of the game. Seconds later, however, Proctor answered as Caroline Coyne netted a goal of her own. Soon, Berwick’s Tiffany Foster was handed a penalty for interference, but the Bulldogs stood strong and returned to full strength. Then, with 41 seconds left in the opening frame, Coyne scored again. This was followed up by a goal from Proctor’s Jules Warmke with three seconds to play in the period, and the teams went to the break with Proctor up, 3-1.

The first 10 minutes of the second period contained back-and-forth hockey until Proctor’s Caroline Larsson was charged with a two-minute penalty. Proctor stood strong on this penalty kill much like the Bulldogs did in the first period, and soon, Violet Sperry passed to Grace Joscelyn, who found the net, extending their lead to 4-1. Minutes later, Berwick’s Anabelle Beaton was handed a penalty and Proctor instantly took advantage as Jaime Hort scored off of an assist from Sperry and Coyne.

Down 5-1, Berwick opened the third period with a change at goalie as Ellie Foye replaced Bella Pomarico. The Bulldogs struck quickly as Rayne Zimmerman scored Berwick’s second goal of the game off an assist from Brittany Foster and Wensley. The Bulldogs followed this up with three more goals in 11 minutes off the sticks of T. Foster once (assisted by Delaney Kingsland) and Wensley twice (assisted by Julia Cabral and Zimmerman, respectively). With this pair of goals, Wensley recorded a hat trick. This sudden spurt tied the game at five with two minutes to play, but Proctor quickly answered as Coyne scored again. This gave Proctor the 6-5 lead that they would hold on to for the remaining 90 seconds despite the Bulldogs pulling their goalie in an attempt to capitalize on an advantage.
