Berwick Academy Head of School Jim Hamilton and Athletic Director Rob Quinn are pleased to introduce John Kauffman as its new Director of Rowing.
Before taking over leadership of the program, Kauffman spent the 2020 spring season as an assistant coach for the Berwick Bulldogs. Prior to the summer of 2019, Kauffman was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wesleyan University Men’s Crew team. In his final year, he helped the men earn their first New England Championship trophy in 15 years. He has also coached the Yale University Lightweights, the men and women at Loyola University of Maryland, and several club rowing programs ranging in age from middle school students to adults learning to row for the first time.

Kauffman learned to row as a walk-on at Bucknell University and remains an avid rower. He has helped with instruction at Great Bay Rowing in Dover, N.H., and last spring he participated in a virtual event with Riverfront Recapture based in Hartford, Connecticut. He also recently competed in the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames in England, U.K., with the Baltimore (Maryland) Rowing Club, his original home.

“Not only is John a deeply knowledgeable and experienced coach, but he is also a talented educator who understands and connects with the students. We are lucky to have him in our community,” says Jim Hamilton, Berwick Academy’s Head of School.

“The opportunity to help the next generation of rowers here at Berwick is exhilarating,” explains Kauffman. “Berwick provides a fantastic environment where I can see both our athletes and the sport flourish. I look forward to introducing more students to the sport and giving them all the tools possible to be successful.”

“We are thrilled to have John Kauffman step in and lead our rowing program. Coach Kauffman is passionate about rowing, and in his first year with the program, connected with many of our athletes. We are fortunate to have such a talented coach to usher the Berwick Rowing program into the next phase,” says Director of Athletics, Rob Quinn.

Kauffman will be taking over leadership of the program from previous head coach Charlie Weymess, Jr., who offered tremendous support and continued to grow the rowing program over the past several seasons.

The Berwick Academy crew program was established in 2013 and partnered with Historic New England’s Hamilton House along the Salmon Falls River in 2015, providing a location to launch and store boats. The program hosted its first race on the Salmon Falls River in 2017. Several of the program graduates have continued their rowing careers at the collegiate level, including at Stanford University, Tufts University, Colby College, Lehigh University, Bucknell University, and the University of Alabama.
