Berwick Beats Bancroft

The Berwick Academy Boys Varsity Soccer team beat Bancroft 9-0 on Wednesday in a matchup of EIL Bulldogs.  The game was never much in doubt as Berwick scored 15 seconds into the contest when Ryan Hall took the opening kickoff and sent it into the Bancroft box, where Garrett Lincoln was there to drive home the first goal before the game was one minute old.  Three minutes later Mitchel Varley lined up a set piece along the goal line, and Tyler Hall, Harry Nigrin and Lincoln all took a cut at it, but there was not a finishing touch available. In the 15th minute, Luke Osgood had a nifty back pass to Varley, whose 15 yard drive forced Bancroft goalie, Eli Stephenson, to make one of his many saves on the day.  Three minutes later, senior Peter Wojdak fed Varley a nice left-footed pass, and the co-captain also used his left to sail a 20 yard drive just wide.  In his first Varsity start, Connor Carmody had a good run in the left backfield, and started the next scoring sequence by feeding Luke Osgood, who threaded one up to Tyler Hall, who showed good patience and forced Stephenson to make the first move.  Hall calmly slotted one past the diving goalie to double the Berwick lead.  Moments later, Varley made an unselfish play in forcing the goalie to come to him as he advanced on net, only to have Varley send it across to Lincoln for a wide open net.  In the 27th minute, a nice combination of passes at midfield between Ahmed Algamil, Alex Penfold and Carmody led to an attempt by the latter’s brother, Declan, but goalie Stephenson was equal to that task. Three minutes before the halftime whistle, striker Albert Allen sent Owen Kenney a nice pass, and he powered it home to increase the lead to four.
Berwick did not let up in the 2nd half. Three minutes in, Tyler Hall took a corner that a Bancroft defender headed away, only to have Harry Nigrin absolutely drill a 30 yard bomb to the upper right corner, leaving Stephenson no chance at all.  In the 55th minute, Hall fed Varley 12 yards out, and the striker did the rest as the ball found the back of the net.  Wojdak almost added to that when he drilled a pass from Hall over the net.  Penfold got in on the action in the 63rd minute, finishing a nice goal with his off foot.  Declan Carmody got on the scorebook when he sent Nick Sergeev a ball to his chest, which Sergeev calmly finished past the goalie.  Sergeev finished the scoring on the day off an assist from Kenney.

Berwick is 6-0-1 on the season, and welcomes Dexter to South Berwick on Friday.
