PENALTIES SPOIL TILT VS. WORCESTER

Andersen Pickard
The Berwick Academy boys varsity ice hockey team hosted Worcester Academy for an evening clash on Friday. The game had been moved up from Saturday afternoon due to an impeding snowstorm.

In a familiar fashion, Berwick jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead. Junior Jack Dempsey found the back of the net following a breakaway effort. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, things went downhill from there. Worcester scored three goals in the first period and added another midway through the second. At this point, they had a 4-1 lead and were aided by four Berwick penalties.

Senior Nick McSorley gave Berwick another goal when he scored off post-graduate Asa Forbes’s assist, but Worcester responded with two more. Six minutes into the third period, the visiting team held a 6-2 lead.

Not willing to go down without a fight, the Bulldogs’ scoring effort continued. Freshman Mikey Mansfield scored his first varsity goal off an assist from senior Liam Martin. Worcester scored once more, and while McSorley answered with a goal off an assist from sophomore Justin Massa, it was too late.

The Bulldogs ran out of time to mount a true comeback, falling by a score of 7-4.

What hurt Berwick the most were its 14 penalties. Their 28 penalty minutes meant that they spent more than half the game in the box. Going forward, it will be imperative for Berwick to have a strong first two periods while avoiding the sin bin.
