Berwick Girls Represent USA in Italy

Cornwell

Team USA Undefeated in Italian Tour

A select New England Team put together by Coach Wayne Sheehan of Dover, NH,  traveled to Italy over March break to play the top Italian Women’s teams in a three game series.  The Italian teams were U-27 regional all star teams and included players from the Italian National Team.  Team USA was a U-19 team with college and high school players from across New England.  Three Berwick students were picked for the team.  They included Junior, Helen Cornwell, Sophomore, Holly Linseman and Freshman, Kelsey MacIsaac.  Berwick Assistant Coach and science teacher, Gray Cornwell was asked to join the coaching staff.

After a tour of Milan with its beautiful castle and cathedral, the team traveled to Torino, the site of the 2006 winter Olympics.   They played the first Italian team in one of the Olympic rinks and won 4-1.  The next day was spent enjoying the Roman baths and high Alps skiing in Bormio.  Day three began with a tour of Como followed by another game in the city of Lecco.  Team USA won 4-0.  Day four included a tour of Lecco and a final game in Como.  They capped off the series with an 8-4 win.  Easter Sunday was spent in Lecco and the team flew back to the USA on Monday.

The Berwick girls and team USA in general represented their country well.  Not only did they form close bonds with each other, but they developed friendships with the Italian players as well.  It was a great cultural experience and the competition was first rate.  It was a trip they will never forget.
