Teacher Training Program: Greg Sokol
Greg Sokol is currently serving as a teaching intern at Berwick in both the science and math departments, while completing an M.Ed. as part of the Graduate Teacher Training Program offered through a partnership between Berwick Academy and Lesley University. A 2010 graduate of Dartmouth College, Greg majored in both mechanical engineering and classics. Upon graduating, Greg worked in the Boston area as a mechanical engineer focusing on industrial automation with a specialty in machine vision and robotics. While Greg enjoyed the work, he discovered that he was much more excited about the opportunities he had to work directly with his clients, training them in computer coding and other operational measures. Through his own intuition and the guidance from friends and colleagues in both the teaching and engineering fields, Greg chose to leave engineering in order to pursue teaching full time.
At Berwick, Greg has had the opportunity to teach Physics, Calculus, Geometry and Algebra II. Greg also serves on the project review committee for the Innovation Center. Of his time at Berwick, Greg shares “Placements with mentor teachers here at Berwick has given me insight into and experience with various teaching styles. I have worked with teachers who have very different, yet equally effective approaches and have benefited from incorporating aspects of their methods into my own classroom approach. Berwick is a school where faculty care about their craft and are constantly working to get better”. Our students have benefitted not only from Greg’s academic background, but also his professional experience, which has allowed our students both in and out of the classroom greater insight into the practical application of the lessons they are learning each day.
