Describe your classroom in five words:
My classroom is a comfortable, busy, interesting, and a curiosity-inspiring place to learn.
Teacher Profile:
I am the Lower School Math Coordinator/Teacher and Science Teacher for grades two through four. I grew up in Nova Scotia and graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax with a Bachelor of Science, Major in Biology. After a professional career in the Information Technology Industry, which brought me to New England, I decided to pursue my lifelong dream of teaching. I graduated from the Berwick Academy Teaching Institute in 2011 with a Master’s of Science in Teaching Methodology through the University of New England. I am the mother of two grown sons and live on a mountain top nearby in New Hampshire.  I love nature and animals, living healthily, gardening, exercising, tinkering with paper and fabrics, and most of all, I enjoy hanging out with my husband and family. The sense of community during my apprenticeship at Berwick Academy led me to pursue a career at this School, and I feel fortunate to be here.

Why do you love teaching Science?
Since I was a young student, I have been fascinated with science, and now I am impressed with how quickly the collective human knowledge is evolving.  I know that the world can be made a better place and that scientific study can make it happen.  It is satisfying to me to nurture the natural curiosity of children in my favorite subject.  I enjoy leading them to discover the wonders of science and the scientific process.  After all, every great scientist was once an elementary school student!

How do you define great teaching?
I know great teaching is happening when I walk into a classroom and see students engaged and busy while they are learning.  Behind the scenes, the teacher has carefully prepared a lesson on a worthwhile topic with important goals that take into account the current learners in the classroom.  The teacher has also nurtured a comfortable environment over time in which students know how to interact and how to work productively.

What is your favorite thing about the Lower School?
My favorite thing about the Lower School is that it is a modern day village.  They say it takes a village to raise a child and that is what happens here. The administration, teachers, parents, and support staff collaborate to provide a well-rounded, healthy environment in which children grow and learn. The people at Berwick Academy truly care about every child; and use their career skills to meet the individual needs of everyone in the community.  Going to work in the morning is something I look forward to because I know I am part of something worthwhile and important.
