  • Coaching: Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach

    Berwick Academy, a PK-12 co-educational independent day school located in southern Maine seeks a Head Coach for Varsity Boys basketball.

    Job Description:

    The Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Berwick Academy is responsible for planning and conditioning, training, and performance of our student athletes, for our varsity boys basketball program. There is also a student-athlete recruiting component for this position. 

    This position reports to the Director of Athletics. This coaching position and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of the New England Preparatory Athletic Council (NEPSAC) and Eastern Independent League.

    Requirements
    Experienced AAU and High School basketball coaches preferred.

  • Faculty: Part Time Lower School Art Teacher

    Berwick Academy, a PK-12 coeducational day school located in Southern Maine, seeks a Part-Time Lower School Art Teacher. Ideal candidates would have experience teaching elementary school aged students as well as the flexibility to work with students ranging in age from three to nine years old. A qualified candidate will show evidence of exceptional teaching and a keen understanding of the developmental needs of a range of students. A collaborative teaching approach and instructional leadership skills among peers are also hallmarks of a successful candidate.   • Faculty: Part-time Middle School Math Tutor

    Berwick Academy Middle School is seeking a part-time Academic Support tutor to support students in math.

    Tutor responsibilities include:
    • Work with Grades 5-8 students in need of math support in groups of 1:1 or 2:1
    • Provide direct instruction of remedial math skills as needed
    • Assist students with math homework and test preparation
    • Review classroom topics to help students understand key concepts
    • Provide periodic updates to parents and Academic Support Coordinator about student progress
    Qualifications include:
    • Experience with teaching math using a direct and multi-sensory approach
    • Experience teaching elementary math concepts, such as place value and fractions, along with Algebra 1 in order to support a wide variety of middle school students
    • Effective communication and collaborative skills in working with students, teachers, and families
    • Ability to constructively work with students in the content area
    • Bachelor's degree in education or appropriate subject area

    Schedule:
    Proposed schedule is as follows, with opportunity to negotiate days and hours if needed.

  • Faculty: Upper School Biology/Chemistry Teacher

    Berwick Academy seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic and creative Science Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year.  The ideal candidate will have flexibility and willingness to teach in all levels of the Science program, with a specialized focus in Biology and the ability to teach either chemistry or physics. This full-time faculty position will include teaching 4 sections of science and contributing to the campus community by coaching or the equivalent during our  afternoon programming and being an advisor. There is a possibility that we will have housing available in exchange for participating in our residential program.

  • Staff: After School Program

    The After School Program Staff serves as assistant manager of the Lower School (Pre-Kindergarten through Fourth Grade) After School Program. The program follows Berwick Academy's academic year calendar and is typically open Monday through Friday of each school week during the after-school hours of 3:05pm to 5:15pm, with typical working hours being 3:00pm to 5:15pm.  The After School Program takes place in the designated Lower School After School rooms and on the Lower School playground.  

    Job-Related Focus Areas
    • Interact with Director of Auxiliary Programs, After School Program Coordinator, Lower School Director and Administrative Assistant:
      • Discuss and promote best practices for positive individual and group progress of After School Program participants.
      • Focus on evolving needs of the program based on seasonal changes, special events, behavioral trends, and other identified areas of attention.
     
    • Interact with Lower After School Program Parents:
      • Maintain an approachable and supportive interaction style with parents/child care providers.
      • Act as a collaborative and supportive adult for participants between home and school (as is expected of all Berwick personnel).
      • Help identify evolving program needs based on parent, participant, and school input.
     
    • Interact with Lower School Participants:
      • Supervise a fluid roster of Lower School participants during outdoor play, indoor arts/crafts/games, scheduled homework time, and music/tutoring/dance lesson transitions. 
      • Work directly with participants (games, homework help, discussions, etc.) in a positive and supportive manner.
     
    • Oversee Upper School Student Assistants:
      • Oversee Upper School students’ work schedules, including consistent clocking in and out of the After School Program work hours.
      • Promote positive, appropriate and consistent supervisory efforts by Upper School students in their interactions with Lower School After School Program participants.
     
    • Plan and Deliver Daily Activities:
      • Assist with activities for each day that are developmentally appropriate and vary in interest, while still allowing for free play and imaginative time
      • Touch on daily and/or weekly themes that introduce seasons, cultures, education, etc.

  • Staff: Buildings and Grounds Team Member

    Berwick Academy, a PK-12 day school in South Berwick Maine seeks a full time responsible Building and Grounds member to join our team and to maintain/protect our facilities. The ideal candidate will be experienced in this role focused on building up keep as well as ground care. They will have great physical endurance to cover a large and vast campus. This individual must have a valid drivers license and pass a state mandated background check. A keen eye for detail and diligence are also imperative in this maintenance position.

    Building and Grounds employees ensure that the facility remains in operating form. Daily tasks will very day-to-day based on what is in need of attention at the time but can frequently include repairs, aesthetic work or tending to the facility’s machinery. The type of work that this position will encounter on an average day is also determined by the Head of Maintenance or Director of Facilities. Some of the responsibilities include but are not limited to the assurance that all academic and administrative spaces on campus be ready for the academic day. Some tasks include the routine maintenance around the building such as fixing structural damage, for example, window, door or wall repair. Repairing broken or leaking plumbing, working on damaged electrical wiring as well as maintaining the building HVAC equipment in order to keep the climate control in the multiple facilities functioning properly. Other responsibilities include taking care of safety hazards that may pose a threat to the community such as laying salt down or shoveling/removing snow on the vast network of sidewalks, steps, driveways and parking lots on campus. Painting (interior and exterior) and basic carpentry skills are included in this overall scope. Our operations team will assist in the delivery of packages, exterior trash, as well as maintaining the overall look and appeal of the grounds here on the property. Lawn mowing, weed whacking, leaf removal and flower bed maintenance are involved in this task. The knowledge to use and maintain industrial cleaning equipment and appliances as well as other devices and maintenance equipment are also a must. These pieces of equipment and tools include vacuums, brooms, mops, extractors, lawn mowers, weed whackers, leaf blowers, tractors (gas and diesel) Ladders etc. The roles of this individual will extend into the assisting of facility related setups that include meetings, classrooms, conferences, events etc. All tasks listed above will require the individual to lift heavy items of up to 50lbs up and down stairways and sidewalks. Some of these tasks may also require the flexibility/ability to work some weekends and early mornings/late nights.

    An important part of this role will always include securing the facilities after operating hours. This is accomplished by locking doors closing windows etc. This includes the reporting of unauthorized occupants. As an employee of the school there is the expectation that the individual will enforce and support the policies established by Berwick Academy and its facilities dept.

  • Staff: Summer on the Hilltop Camp Counselor

    Do you consider yourself a leader?  Do you have camp, babysitting, after school program, or coaching experience?  Do you love working with children and having fun?

    If so, then we would like to talk to you!

    Being a camp counselor is a hard job, but also a highly rewarding one that will build your resume, teach you life skills, and open opportunities.  You’re not just a camp counselor, you’re a life changer!

    Along with the director of each camp, your duties will include, but are not limited to, supervising and ensuring participants' safety and fun, greeting parents and participants, setting up for and leading group activities, problem solving, checking attendance, working with other counselors, cleaning, and more.

    Applications will be reviewed and you will be notified if you are selected for an interview.  Please note that counselors should be able to work at least 4 weeks of the summer.

  • Teaching Apprentices

    Berwick Academy's Teaching Apprentice Program (TAP) offers a purposeful blend of hands-on teaching experiences and graduate courses, resulting in a M.Ed. from Lesley University. Each TA works full time under the guidance of experienced Berwick mentors for an entire academic year while taking Lesley courses. Our apprentices develop the knowledge and skills essential for successful teaching while earning legitimate work experience at one of New England’s finest independent schools. The program will begin in June, and is open to aspiring educators.
