Lower School | PK-4

Welcome to Berwick Academy!

I sincerely appreciate your interest in the Lower School program, Berwick’s foundational division. From daily engagement in our homeroom classrooms and exploration studies (art, library, music, physical education, science, technology and world language -- Mandarin and Spanish) to the supportive exchanges within our social-emotional learning and wellness endeavors, the Lower School provides an exemplary educational experience. In a distinctly joyful environment, students deepen their curiosity and creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and become contributing members within the Lower School’s pre-kindergarten through fourth grade supportive setting.

Our Lower School program features an innovative Flex Model that allows for flexibly dividing students by specific grade level(s) and discrete learning experiences throughout the school day and school year in order to enhance learning and social experiences. Team-teaching and inter-class / inter-age connections are at the heart of this model, which is especially geared to relationships at the kindergarten - first grade levels and at the second grade - third grade levels.

Additionally, the Flex Model provides an opportunity for the pre-kindergarten and fourth grade classes to develop their unique focus as anchor grades at their respective ends of the Lower School grade-level spectrum. Within our innovative model, students still progress from year to year and grade to grade in the normal pre-kindergarten through fourth grade progression.

Berwick’s Lower School teachers are committed to bringing out the joy and passion of each child. This close connection between teacher and student in our self-contained homeroom and exploration classrooms aids in our sincere goal of understanding each student as both an individual and group-oriented learner. Throughout our well-rounded daily program, a sense of camaraderie and engagement permeates the Lower School learning environment. Regardless of grade level, active group experiences help our students realize that they are essential members of a community in which all are invested in their intellectual, social, and personal growth and success.

I look forward to sharing the excitement of our Lower School community with you. From the incredibly strong student-teacher relationships, to exciting experiential learning experiences (like the interactive sandbox and salt water touch tank), to the genuine excitement that our students bring to school each day, the Lower School serves as an exceptional entry point into the Berwick Academy three division, one school experience!

With appreciation,

Joel Hawes, Lower School Director
