Health and Nutrition

The Wellness Center offers a top-flight nursing facility for students that utilizes the many talents of the school’s nurse. The school nurse is located in the Wellness Center, offering high quality care for students in a relaxing and restorative setting.

Health & Nutrition

Designated space for rest and recovery from concussions and/or migraines allows students to recover in a supportive and supervised environment. In addition to existing coursework on nutrition in all three divisions, the school regularly develops age-appropriate programming that engages and informs the community about up to date research on healthy eating. Additionally, the learning lab includes a test kitchen, allowing students to engage in meaningful, hands-on skills through our nutrition curriculum, guiding their interest in healthy food preparation.

Health & Wellness Education

Berwick Academy’s Health & Wellness programming spans grades Pre-K-12 and focuses on health topics most pertinent to each grade level. Within the Lower School, Wellness is coupled with both the Physical Education Program and Social Emotional Learning Program (SEL) so that students begin to understand the connection between the mind and body. Middle School students experience Health & Wellness classes twice a week, while incoming Grade 9 students participate in an interactive health education trimester class that focuses on relevant adolescent health issues as well as academic skill building.

  • SAGE Dining Services

SAGE Dining Services provide another source of nutrition education. The daily choices offered at lunch can be viewed by parents and students in the myBERWICK site. These choices are categorized by a color coded dot system, intended to help guide healthy choices. SAGE sources food items from local farms whenever possible. The yearly Eat Here or Eat Near event includes information about organic, hormone free and sustainable foods. SAGE also offers Educational Seasonings programs to introduce Berwick diners to new cuisines, flavors and foods.
  • School Nurse

The school nurse provides ongoing supportive physical and emotional care to students during their school day. She works collaboratively with students, families and faculty to enhance the educational process by identifying and addressing health barriers to learning. The school nurse assists in monitoring chronic medical problems as well as identifying and providing support during short term illnesses. She serves as a medical resource for students, parents, faculty and staff, and supports the development of self care strategies in students.
  • Athletic Training

The athletic trainer is the link between the athlete, the parent, the coach and the medical community. The athletic training facility is situated between the gym and the field house. Various modalities, such as an ultrasound machine, a whirlpool, a hydrocollator, and an ice machine are used in the treatment of athletic injuries. At Berwick, we value the importance of concussion management and IMPACT testing (computerized concussion evaluation system) for all of our athletes. The athletic trainer and the school nurse, in conjunction with teachers, advisors, and coaches, maintain a robust program and protocol for students who experience concussions.
  • Faculty Interest in Student Health

FISH (Faculty Interest in Student Health) is designed to provide non-disciplinary support to all members of the school community. Referral, support, and guidance will be given to any individual who seeks help or is referred to a faculty member with a wellness concern (i.e. substance abuse, eating disorders, social media, promiscuity, self-harm, etc). Parents or students with questions should call the school counselor.
