Desiree Lorden

Kindergarten Assistant
As a young child, I can remember looking up to my teachers and being inspired by them and admiring the work that they did.
When asked as a young girl what I wanted to do when I grew up, I always had the same answer, “I want to be a teacher.” Following my dreams, I went to the University of New Hampshire where I achieved a degree in Child and Family Studies while studying and teaching at an array of different schools ranging from Preschool to Fourth grade. Throughout the past several of years, I have enjoyed volunteering in local elementary schools, working at the Seacoast Charter School and most importantly being a mom of two young children. As a family, we can be found enjoying the outdoors, playing sports or simply making the most of being together.

Why do you enjoy teaching Kindergarten?
My passion to make a difference and teach is still as strong as it was when I was a little girl. I consider myself very fortunate to continue this educational journey here at Berwick and only hope that through my teaching that I will spark the interest of many others at such an early age. Teaching Kindergarten is empowering. I love watching my students grow throughout the year; emotionally, socially and overall individually.

What defines great teaching?
I am a firm believer that each moment is a teachable moment.  A quote that I embrace and believe that makes for a great teacher is, “Teach a child how to think, not what to think.” ~ Sidney Sugarman.

Describe your classroom in five words:
SMILE: Supportive, Motivating, Inclusive, Language (Positive) and Engaging.

What do you love about the Lower School?
It’s not just the Lower School that I enjoy, it’s truly being part of the Berwick community as a whole. I find Berwick to be a very open-minded and flexible school. There are so many inquisitive and willing minds, young and wise, to support and show sincere generosity into each and every one of their fellow encounters; whether it be to a student, a parent or a colleague. The kindness here at Berwick Academy is contagious and very radiant.
